How about elixir?

I think most people would make a pigs ear if they tried coding in Elixir.

Elixir was created by a Rails core guy so the syntax is rubyish, but much faster, so that seems to solve grim's problem with the exception that it's not really popular.

Check out crystal. It's c speed with almost identical to ruby syntax (with types)

Interesting article about replacing API Gateway with an elixir app to save money: https://medium.com/coryodaniel/from-...r-48752db4d7bc

I'm not sure how I feel about this thread. This person seems like they have some issues.

Dude seems quite unhinged indeed.

I only read the first 20 or posts, all his "it took ..." ones. Are those the unhinged part? Not knowing the dude it sounds like he just isn't very good at the job yet but doesn't know it?

I would say he is unhinged because he is posting lots of things as if people didn't believe in him and treated him as inferior or undeserving, about things that call his competence into question. It isn't doing what it's intended to do and is awkward to post before starting a job.

Some of these come off as very chest-beating-I-am-developer-hear-me-roar, yet some are kinda self-deprecating.

I like the latter a lot more than the former.

His portfolio includes... mastodon? With a link to mastodon.social? I don't know what to make of that

http://createdbylex.com/

ETA: oh, I guess he contributed to the project. Seems pretty misleading though.

Yea I hate those posts. Everyone has had those struggles but for many, they don’t post about them. But he thinks he’s special and is using twitter to showcase that.

I think my biggest issue with the posts is that it paints things as nobody believing in him and having to overcome adversity, but then several of the struggles are his own incompetence - like not studying for interviews...

It's funny he went to General Assembly because personalities like his were the thing I disliked the most in my time there, and they were unfortunately quite common.

I'm not sure I can accurately explain it in a short post, but essentially there was a cohort of toxic people who felt entitled to becoming a developer. This entitlement meant when they didn't understand something, it was being taught to them wrong, or too fast, etc. They refused to Google simple things and would hold up class because they paid their 15k and by gosh if they didn't grok something they wouldn't let the class continue until they did.

Trying to explain something one-on-one during a break would be incredibly frustrating because they would constantly question your knowledge and it was always "well my friend who is a rockstar developer said this so you are the one who is mistaken."

Fortunately, several of these people started to fail and quit the program early (often in a flameout).

I was not prepared for this toxicity at first and it bummed me out. They also seemed to have the attitude of "I know real developers and none of you idiots will never be as good as my friend, but he said I'm smart so once I understand this stuff I'm gonna be better than all of you."

There were also a lot of smart people from humble backgrounds who are going to be very successful.

Yeah when you're just starting out there's a sweet spot of confidence between total impostor syndrome and unjustified entitlement.

Too hot: I'm super smart and it's just a matter of time until I figure this all out and leave you all in the dust.

Too cold: Holy **** this is hard. Everyone seems to be getting it easier than me. They know I'm a fraud.

Goldilocks: **** you code. I know I'm smart enough to figure this out so we're gonna stay here all night if we have to. You will not defeat me.

Yea I was firmly in the 3rd category.

On week 1 they gave us an optional challenge and labeled it as required homework (they said it was an honest mistake but I'm still not sure they weren't trying to push us).
And I spent 8 hours on it that weekday night and _dave_ from here helped as well. It was about traveling through the subway given a starting location and end location.

I came in with a working solution that was ugly, 1 dude had his developer friend do it and wrote a long complaint about how it was the wrong way to teach people and not fair. One other girl had an even uglier solution than me that also worked.

Her and I were two of the fastest to get jobs. He quit a couple weeks later.

definitely comes off as tone def. i don't know what he is trying to show or achieve with the email from his employer who sounds really reasonable and makes him look really bad. is that supposed to be self deprecating?

Just call that whole thread “it’s not impostor syndrome if you actually suck”

Having a talk w my boss about problem coworker today.

I spent my entire day friday debugging her scripts. Some of it ended up being user error on my part, which could have rapidly been fixed if she had either made the code easier to read (near unreadable) or documented better/at all. Or just simply taken 5 mins and helped me.

That’s besides the issue that they’re still broken and obviously not tested. My boss told me to go ahead and just fix them myself this morning which I did. Now I am going to spend another day of time on something she shouldve done/tested in the first place.

To top it all off she waltzes into the office around noon with no discernable excuse and delayed a meeting I wanted to have at 10am.

I am trying to think of how to diplomatically handle this but I am going to make it very clear I cannot succeed at my job if this continues.

Well it sounds like your boss is aware of the situation. Any further bringing it up you risk becoming the squeaky wheel. Which I can tell you from being a squeaky wheel most of my career, is never the best place to be.

One other thing to ask yourself is if the extra experience and brownie points you're getting for cleaning up her work are actually a net positive for you in the long run? If so I'd just keep doing it.

But here's the most crucial part: make sure everyone is aware you're doing it. Obviously you need to be a bit clever about how you go about that. But imo never assume extra work is going noticed. Always make sure everyone knows - one way or another.

Yea I feel maybe I'm overreacting a tad and your approach is better but will still foster some resentment. I just started including my boss on all emails I send to her (otherwise it gets ignored) including the one where I detailed my fixes to the scripts and where I thought they could be further improved.

Don't even care anymore if it pisses someone off, I shouldn't have to be doing this in the first place.

A few days ago iMessage on my Mac stopped working. I tried all the google stuff - logging in and out, logging out of iCloud. I also created an admin test user on my mac and it worked for the test user.

One thing I read said that sometimes your iCloud gets hosed and you have to call apple support to unhose it. So I tried that. I got through immediately, talked to one guy for a while with no luck. Then he transferred me to second level and we tried a few things. Ultimately disengaging my keychain from iCloud, setting back to defaults, then logging out and logging back in to iCloud seems to have done the trick.

All in all I was on the phone about 45 min. Imagine trying to get that level of support from Microsoft. Crazy.
