idk, I got 50%, and we're probably not the only ones who have seen that kind of jump lately.

Congrats!!

Thanks everyone. It's definitely a hiring market so get out there if you're thinking about it. Interview process is a cluster **** everywhere but worth it

This is like therapy for me. The slack one especially is so bad.

That slack "feature" drives me insane. I hit it at least once a week.

Yeah, I have hit it so often that it's not an issue anymore.

in chrome I often use the "request blocking" to mimic an API being down.

but now I need to do some testing in other browsers and have no idea how to do it and google is of now help or at least my searches suck. anyone know how to block an api call in edge, ie, and firefox?

Load the page then kill your network connection before the api call is made?

My T key is going bad on my ~7 year old mac pro. It takes longer and longer of mashing it to get it to "warm up" and start working every session. Is it worth even trying to get it fixed? I paid $800 for this thing used bout 4 years ago.

I doubt if it is worth it. I have one that is 1 year old, first one I have ever owned. I am amazed how fast it powers up.

I can do it programatically which is easier than killing a network connection. also I think if I kill my connection then my browser app will die too which wont work for me. I was just hoping there was a simple button to push.

Holy crap Amazon sucks compared to ebay for mac laptops. They never list the model year unless someone asks. No idea if it's retina or not. For ones that I know are retina it has the resolution wrong.

Anyway - is "disks not included!" something I should be worried about? Seems like a great deal on a 2017 mac pro 13" otherwise.

You don't need disks for OS X install or update so I wouldn't worry about it.

Can you guys actually program these days on 8GB RAM? My last consulting comp was 8 and it was unbearable

Sublime Text doesn't need much ram.

If that is the only tool you use at work, I would go with the assumption your work is boring

And also potentially lucky that no docker jammed everywhere

Everything is hosted on AWS lambda, dynamo, API-Gateway and S3 (powered by github, code pipeline, cloud formation). Connects to a back-end CRM system that another team runs.

serverless deploy -f ftw

I do run create-react-app locally. But I don't think that uses much memory either.

I do have to run Visual Studio every now and then for the C# lambdas. But I have a desktop PC for that. Actually I don't even have to run Visual Studio. I just do it so I know what the C# dev is seeing wrt to the project.

And you develop everything against cloud instances?
** UnhandledExceptionEventHandler :: OFFICIAL LC / CHATTER THREAD ** Quote

There are no cloud instances of servers, except hosting the react site on S3, unless you mean lambdas.

Deploying individual lambdas with serverless takes 5 seconds or so. Much easier to just deploy dev instances on AWS vs. trying to set up SAM local or whatever the local lambda simulator is.

The react site runs locally on create-react-app/webpack (node) - but connects to the dev API.

We do have some wordpress sites on elastic beanstalk - but I don't have to mess with those.

The big resource hog for Mac is Virtual Box - which is needed for IE-testing. The main front-end dev is always complaining about how it kills his machine - and I'm like just take my desktop PC for now. But he won't. I think he likes complaining and having an excuse to put off IE testing.

It's possible depending on what you are doing.

I flirted with the idea of getting a cloud vm and then just sshing in to do my development with a cheap laptop. But I don't do much personal development outside of work so will probably never around to it.

guy on my team has an 8gb. its atrocious. he refuses to upgrade, I think bc he doesnt want to be more productive.

our backend is a massive behemoth that has been around for about 15 years. just continue to slap more fixes and patches on top of it. running it locally is like cross your fingers and pray to god. theres like 3 ppl left in the whole company that actually truly know how the thing works. the rest of us just know how to throw various **** at the wall and hope it fixes it so we can run it and test.

anyway, it takes the guy about 15 minutes to do a rebuild.

ya I prefer the front end for sure.
