In related news I accepted a new job today, fifty percent increase in comp without including stock (I'm leaving a company who's stock is surely valueless for one that is potentially incredibly valuable).

Process was 2 in-persons that included 2 whiteboarding sessions, a lunch interview, and a coffee interview.

These were my first whiteboarding interviews and I feel so much more confident about it now.

Yeah I applied to some cybercoders stuff a long time ago. Then for ages I got emails from their recruiters about openings. The few times I did respond with interest I got a reply back asking for an updated resume. The couple times I did provide a resume again at that point I never heard anything again.

Damn I guess they really are a resume collector.

My resume seems to at least always get a call back for full stack developer with node. But not with cybercoders so far.

Yes congrats LL! I get you mixed up with Rusty, so when I first read that I thought - wait, didn't you just get bought out by AT&T?

You're both green, names about the same size, avatars kinda similar.

Well, congrats on this part at least.

We've been working with some big customers the last little bit that have strong requirements and intense auditing processes. I imagine its even more intense for the security side of things and it'll probably be interesting to see how the big name helps (or doesn't).

Anyway, I bet its exciting for the next little while.

I feel like scaling things like that are really really hard but possible.
I think in general people are just really skeptical of certifications like this. The incentive for the people running the process is to pass people... and so it quickly becomes pretty meaningless. It almost needs to be operated by a professional body or non-profit so that at least you can somewhat align incentives.

nice! how were the two in-person interviews different from each other?

If someone is very good at white boarding and interviewing, there is actually less motivation for them to do a good job at work since they can quickly land another job.

First whiteboard question was basically just writing some functions to hit an endpoint, receive a payload, write that payload to a file, manipulate it a bit, and send it to another endpoint.

Second was iterating through an object of x length and y complexity and creating a new flat object with some certain requirements. I felt like as soon as I started and said "typically when iterating through an object that may have objects inside it, I'd use recursion as a first step" things got off to a good start. I just used Object.hasOwnProperty to pass that key back into the function. Then the interviewer changed the original object and the requirements some and I changed my function. My function ended up taking 2 params, one was optional with empty string as the default value. We walked through the object and the function and wrote the output and there was a bug or two that I immediately identified and knew how to fix.

Overall I felt like I had a great balance between quickly displaying knowledge and confidence while also not focusing too hard on getting the syntax exactly perfect, and asking good questions around edge cases and just clarifying questions in general. In one spot the interviewer said I had a name collision on variables and I said basically "I think technically since this function creates a closure here, there isn't actually a collision, but I totally agree that the way I named it is bad" and later he had done some quick searching on his phone and said "yea you were right about that closure" which I responded saying "but you are right that was a bad choice for a variable name anyway in this context".

It was a pleasant experience because while getting syntax perfect on a whiteboard is very difficult, I feel like displaying the required level of competence, good attitude, and seeming like a good culture fit can all come out in a whiteboard session pretty naturally if done right. Also I feel like there's a personality element where if you are not 100% sure of the syntax you can write a comment in your whiteboard code for some fairly trivial step and say something like, here well convert this object to a 2D array and almost everyone will just let that slide without grilling you on the exact syntax of doing it. Since they are caring more about higher level logical and design abilities since looking up syntax takes milliseconds and having no idea how to design something can take days.

What intrigued you about this new place / made you want to leave your current work?

My current company is essentially circling the drain but even moreso we recently hired someone who has proven to be incredibly toxic and just the worst type of person (incredibly lazy, out of the office constsntly, always shifting blame to others, only interested in managing up and attending meetings, trying to get any sniff of management possible, untruthful and deceitful, just bad).

The new company is one of the hottest b2b startups there is right now and seem like they are destined for hyper growth and tons of success, and I got connected to them through consultants I know who are quite serious.

the money probably? Personally I'm only working where I am because of the compensation. I'd be doing the same CRUD somewhere else except for less money otherwise.

Very cool. You're in a big city if I recall? I'm enjoying your supercharged journey so far. It's pretty crazy how many devs sit on their hands at places they don't like, so its refreshing to see someone who is willing to set a new course.
