That sounds promising already.

Anyone use SmartGit? I am using it for the first time, and not really getting on with it.

My default was command line before, but i'm not allowed to use it at clients', for some reason.

I have a Dell XPS 15 with Windows 10 that's about 1.5 years old. I've decided I'm gonna wipe it and go full Ubuntu because I like Linux a lot and haven't really been using my computer for anything Windows-specific. I'm familiar with Linux and have installed Ubuntu on past laptops but kinda suck with backups/install discs/etc. and whatnot and have gotten into trouble before when I wanted to revert to Windows.

I googled for a bit and I'd like someone to verify my assumptions here to make sure I don't screw myself over. (Note: I don't care about data, I just want to be able to reinstall W10 in the future)
  • Since I bought the Dell with Windows 10 on it, I have a Windows 10 license
  • I should be able to go to Microsoft website and download Windows 10 media creation tool thingy (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...load/windows10) to a USB drive
  • ^^ I'll probably do that before installing Ubuntu, but I should be able to do that at any time/from any computer, right?
  • To install Ubuntu, I just download Ubuntu desktop standard stuff to another USB drive, boot off it, go through all the normal steps

Also, does anyone know anything about drive partitioning details I should be aware of? E.g. is there a "backup" partition I should consider keeping? I recall in past explorations I've made very unsure decisions in the Ubuntu installation process about handling current drive partitions.

Thanks guys!

:/. At least you got a response! I’m still getting rejection emails 1.5 years later. Makes it awkward when I have my phone lying around and I get an email notification while I’m at work. Oops

On such a recent computer, the Win10 key is stored in the BIOS so it should pick it up automatically when installing from the ISO. There are freeware programs you can use to extract the key and display it so you can note it down, that shouldn't be necessary but you may like to do so for peace of mind.

I wouldn't worry about recovery partitions or anything like that - any Dell will have current versions of all it's drivers easily downloadable should they be needed after a fresh Windows installation anyway. I'm assuming these days you won't be stuck unable to access the internet if your laptop can't connect due to missing drivers.

Apparently, people prefer GUI. The risk is that they would be scared of command line, although I don't think we tested this theory in practice.

saw,

When I was young I set up a computer with a windows partition and an ubuntu partition and it was surprisingly easy and at times very convenient when I later decided I wanted to play some windows-only video games.

If you have the harddrive space it may be worth just partitioning the two OSs.

Thanks guys. Yea I was doing all this thinking/planning at work. And now I'm realizing I have way more (> 2x) hard drive space than I assumed. I have 403 GB free / 476. Lol. I should probably dual boot, split it down the middle. Something about it feels less "pure" and fun, but that's irrational.

Lol yeah, would def recommend dual boot with that kind of free space.

Meh screw windows saw, don't let them talk you out of it. Linux only and learn haskell

Meh, if I install linux at home and have a dual boot windows I usually end up being stuck in windows because I'm a gaming addict and rebooting is a hassle.

I'd go pure.

One of the reasons I bought a laptop with Windows (others being availability and knowing I can always get free Ubuntu later) was gaming, but I've pretty solidly narrowed my gaming down to occasional PS4 use (I can barely find enough games I'm interested in there these days) and never play games on my laptop.

So I guess there's kind of 2 related reasons to dual instead of full Linux: 1) why not? what am I getting out of 100% Linux? Obv more hard drive space but the evidence shows I wouldn't use it anyway, and 2) related, sort of given 1, seems like low risk/high reward to keep the W10 in case I run into some random piece of software I wanna use that requires it.

But dual booting just feels like a cop out :/ lol

what are your actual reasons for wanting to run linux full-time on what seems to be your only or primary machine?

I basically just prefer it as an OS, simple as that. I can do everything I want in both OS's.

For my machines at home that I use directly (i.e. not servers or whatever) I use windows. I install cygwin on them which gives me both a linux-like interface, and most of the tools you get on linux, plus the ability to use most programming languages in a familiar form (gcc or llvm in a posix environment, etc)

Windows + cygwin is enough like linux that I can get real work done. I also run a few linux machines as servers just to run the stuff I use to do work: docker, database servers, X server, etc.

There is a legit linux subsystem for windows now, but I've never tried it.

Well I'd flip it around and ask, what do you actually use Windows for? Note, all of my dev is personal/hobby stuff, so there's no requirement for Visual Studio (and I don't prefer it) even if i wanted to play in C++ land.

WSL and Cygwin are k. But I don't see any advantages to Windows-only or disadvantages to a native Linux given that I have lots of SSD space.

There are a lot of programs I use on a regular basis that are windows only. Most of those aren't for work but I don't really feel like rebooting 3x a day. I use the windows machines for light local work and otherwise more or less as "terminals" for the linux machines.

I used to dual boot around 7-8 years ago, it really sucked because switching between the 2 is a massive context switch. It doesn't matter if it only takes 20 seconds because it's an SSD.

You'll end up dictating your behavior based around dual booting, you'll see in due time.

I would just use WSL because ever since the big Windows update a few months ago it's really good. I spend a ton of time in it every day while working with Linux based tools / runtimes.

What exactly is it about Linux that you prefer?

I use MacOS/Windows/Linux all fairly regularly - MacOS and Windows both pretty much just work. Linux is least polished, requires the most work to maintain, is most likely to break randomly and is most likely to be unsupported for any given non-dev task. I've been using Linux on and off for over 20 years and while things have gotten better, it's just not a great OS for everyday needs.
