I know that the code or response isn't going to be amazing if I push back 50 LOC in an hour. I'd rather discuss what I would do different if I wasn't just rushing out an answer, so it almost feels like I would get judged on something that really doesn't count.
seems like you're asking 2 questions. if you turn something in, and you know it's bad and know what's bad about it, but you did it that way because you were rushed and just trying to finish, and already know how to improve it, then you don't need feedback. but do let them know, and verbally explain how you'd refactor given more time. assuming you are spot on in your self-critique, that would get you major points with me, personally.

to answer your other question, when turning it in, i'd include a note like: "hey, just want to thank you for the opportunity and say i had fun working on this. regardless of how it turns out, i'd really appreciate any feedback you have time give, since i'm always trying to improve."

that will score you attitude points and i'd expect most people to give feedback when asked like that.

It seems like a lot of the same principles apply in terms of keeping scrums focused and tabling discussions for follow up.

Just got my first internship offer! It's going to be in Palo Alto!

I really screwed up by not asking for more when I was given the offer over the phone. I think I had several chances to counter right then and there. Now I am sitting at home looking at the email offer. I will probably accept tomorrow.

$31/hr, $2300 lump sum relocation and $800 monthly stipend. I guess it's not bad, though housing in Palo Alto ain't cheap.

well i think part of the issue is that the design team have their meeting to decide on what looks good, so none of the engineers go to that even though we're invited.

by the time everyone meets, engineers have to give feedback on feasibility (more or less makes it design review but can't really table it) and also time estimates, which seems to take forever.

Do you force engineers to go to the initial design meeting? have 3 meetings (looks good, feasibility, estimates)? our manager opened up his calendar and it's more or less 8 hrs of meetings a day already

That is actually something we are actively working to improve atm. Our Dir of Engineering is meeting with Creative Officer to go over techniques and strategies in designing for the technology we use. Up to this point the designers have kinda done their own thing and it's now something we need to tighten up.

For an upcoming project, we're going to first have a design sprint before normal sprints and our lead architect is going to be involved in some of the design meetings to provide feedback.

I would really consider sending someone from the engineering team to those design meetings, especially if you currently have an invite and don't attend. You might be able to have that person answer questions on the dev side without needing to go into depth with the designers. I think ideally you have a architect/senior engineer attend, that way when assigning points they may already have an idea of what it's going to take.

Thanks! Such a relief to be done looking for jobs. Now I can focus on school since it's kicking my ass right now. The jump in difficulty is insane going from community college to a university.

$31/hr is about what I was making at my last job heh. I imagine cost of living is radically higher though.

Congrats Barrin, seems like a decent deal and that combined with the experience the position will give you should bode well for the future. When I worked at Intel the interns were given some surprisingly challenging assignments. Do your assignments well because you can get some good references as a result.

Adelaide is probably a bit like Omaha when it comes to IT work. Better wages are to be had in Sydney and Melbourne. It was also my first job back after 6-7 years playing poker, so I had resume gap issues, and quit in the end partly because of the pay.

South Australia is the only state to have been free-settled (i.e. there was not a penal colony here). My family tree does however have a (great)^n-grandfather who was transported to Australia for murder.

I always have to look up where Adelaide is. It's big enough that I know the name but not big enough that I remember where it is.

I think it's partly because I have the mental model of east and west coasts being the developed areas and so I can never remember where it is.

I know your capital though - I swear it was asked at least once a month for the high school trivia team I was on. And there was always one idiot that would go 'I can never remember if it's Melbourne or Sydney'.

Canberra is actually a planned city that was built as a compromise after Federation because Melbourne and Sydney were unable to agree on which of them got to be national capital.

I didn't know it was a planned city. I knew the compromise angle because it's the same reason Ottawa is the capital of Canada.

I think the story for Ottawa is the Queen picked it to settle the fight but I suspect that's a bit exaggerated.

Congratulations! Awesome work!

Excuse the snark, but you could stay in the YMCA on that salary. I'd say marry rich, but you'll find that there's about 4 women to every 100 guys out there.

If it isn't worth struggling for, it isn't worth it.

Can you talk about what you will be working on?

Also jj your mental model for Australia is way off. The east coast is developed and then theres Perth Adelaide Darwin and not much else. The west coast north of Perth is vast amounts of nothing. Towns of 5,000 people and hundreds of miles in between.

I'm not surprised about my mental model. Is the west coast north of Perth nice but uninhabited or is it just desert and not very pleasant living conditions?
** UnhandledExceptionEventHandler :: OFFICIAL LC / CHATTER THREAD ** Quote

I haven't been north of Perth, but it's quite nice in terms of there's lots of good fishing and surfing and an excellent unspoilt coral reef. The problem is that the soils are extremely nutrient-poor and there are issues with water supply for most of it.

Aside from a few specialist settlements (e.g. the pearl-fishing town of Broome) there was never an economic reason for anyone to live out there and still isn't. And it's very very isolating - if you live in Carnavon which isn't even halfway up the coast, it's over 9 hours drive to Perth. The next closest cities of 100,000+ people? Darwin or Adelaide are both about 35 hours drive away.

Makes sense. I hated living in Ottawa which is only an hour or two drive from another large city.
