As long as it is a reputable company, which all of those are, you shouldn't have any problems. Even Crucial and Samsung have had some firmware bugs that they had to fix. I would go with whatever is cheapest per GB among the reputable companies.

Last time I partitioned a hd it said it would take 13 hours and it was a machine with catastrophic overheating problems. I felt like it was 100% chance that it would overheat and fail mid-way through and fry my hd. But, by some miraculous fortune it actually worked flawlessly.

I can't partition this computer. For some reason Lenovo uses up everything, probably for that bluefish or whatever that spyware is called. In any case, I don't use Windows for anything anymore, so no point keeping it, but I think the SDD is the best bet. I don't want to be stuck with a 300g database on a partitioned computer.

If you need this for work, please don't nuke your computer and get fired. You worked so hard.

Windows admin may be able to resize it, if you're an admin account.

If not, at least Ubuntu has a partition resizer on the install.

Don't mess about with partitioning for the sake of saving $100 on what will be a massive upgrade anyway. Just buy SSD, swap it in, install. If need be, swap back in the old HDD to boot windows again.

Partitioning / dual booting etc isn't actually hard - but it is certainly a little risky if you aren't sure what you're doing.

It is also what a shortage looks like. I have no idea whether it represents a tech bubble or shortage. I am positive that the ways to apply digital technology solutions for real world product development will continue to grow and probably at a rapid pace. This bodes well for the long term anyway in software development.

The mindless sheeple are the ones that buy a windows laptop because they're brainwashed to think, using a pos operating system on a pos piece of hardware makes them a smart individual.

In reality they're saving a couple hundred or even a thousand dollars that won't even make a difference; when they're field requires using that computer daily, a job that most likely will give them more than enough money to live comfortable with purchasing an apple product or x and now get to deal with the half assed experience of using the piece of **** product.

seriously though, as far as chick computers go, macs are pretty good.

I feel like unless you're programming specifically for iOS/OSX or Windows, there's absolutely no reason to buy a Mac when you can buy a Windows machine and dual boot. I have a Windows laptop and an older Mac Mini, and unless I'm doing something in XCode, I always boot into Linux. Regular tasks just seem a little bit snappier, and the package managers do a much better job of figuring everything out.

OSX is usually pretty good, but every once in a while you run into something with, say, a Ruby gem that needs a particular library, but OSX has an out of date version or has it installed in some non-standard location, and then you need to figure out how to manually override it. Linux though, just apt-get or whatever the package you need, and it just works immediately.

Why do I want to dual boot when I can have one os that does almost everything I need? There's the odd time I'll hit an error with something like a ruby gem (or Java version) but it's usually figured out pretty fast.

Edit: My statement would be unless you're doing dev specifically for Windows, there's absolutely no reason to run Windows.

I switched from dual-boot desktop (XP & Ubuntu at the time) and a Vista laptop (Sattelite Pro) to a MacBook Pro in 2008.
I had to upgrade both my desktop and laptop anyway and thought I'd give the MacBook Pro and OS X a go.
My previous encounter with a Mac around 1998 or 1999 left me not liking it at all, so it was time to see for myself again.

Plan was, if I did not like it, to keep the MacBook Pro for surfing and administrative work and get another, fresh dual boot desktop.
I never went back. It really "just works" for me.

The Surface 4 looks pretty interesting, it's great to have another hardware vendor making cool stuff. Competition makes all the products better. I'm not going back to Windows though...
