I don't know about "new hotness" but I saw something about Bootstrap 4 alpha coming out recently (http://blog.getbootstrap.com/2015/08...strap-4-alpha/). They switched from LESS to SASS and rewrote all the JS plugins in ES6. That seems kinda like "new hotness" to me.

picked this up today. "noiseless fan" is on even when the laptop is in sleep.

also, doesn't seem to fit a 15" mbp very well, or maybe i haven't found the sweet spot yet. If you try to rest the edge of the laptop on the bottom ridge, the laptop wobbles when you put your hands down to type.

Ah - I have a 13" mbp

Why do you guys need those fans?
I've never had any issue with my mbp overheating and I have it sit on anything.

Usually if the thing is hot by not being on a solid flat surface; I just crank the fans to max and it is cool with any number of programs running when fans are blasting.
Noise from fans never heard; when listening to music by or with headphones jus being over ears.

I'm mostly in air-conditioned building when using laptop and can understand using it outside with summer heat but how often is that.

My 13" MBP gets pretty hot on my lap. Especially when watching any kind of video.

If Giz turns a video on her slightly older than mine mbp, it basically bursts into flames

How the hell does one manually control fan speed on a Mac?

There's an app for that

I just don't remember what it's called

With fans running full blast?

I use iStat Menus to control fans and it comes with really nice menubar live graph of memory and cpu with temps. Little snitch for network monitor and perfect combo but cost $$$.

smcFanControl is what I used to use and it is free.

I removed flash completely from my mac and that really made a difference on performance. I'm guessing you guys have already done that but you should if you haven't.

Btw with the fan control, don't go from low to high right away. That is probably bad for the fans and could wear them down. Some software you can find, will allow you to do that.

I'm also using smcFanControl. Works like a charm for me.

Would you guys be interested in a technology blog focused on various topics of interest for software engineers, but not on specific technologies? Like management, methodology, career, interviewing, hiring, software design, choosing technologies/frameworks, etc. Kind of like what Joel on Software used to be, I guess, but a little more from the perspective of an engineer and less from the perspective of the owner. I know there's a lot out there already and I'm not sure that there's much of an audience for these things. I'm finally beginning to have some spare time and trying to figure out what to do with it.

Honestly, writing a book seems a lot more rewarding than writing a blog.

99.99% of the time you are going to abandon the blog when you see no one is reading it.

write an e-book. I hear steelhouse from politics has been cultivating one for years.

Is joel widely viewed in a positive light?

I saw this youtube and the guy had a pretty negative view of him. Wasnt sure if that's the norm or not.

somewhere around a half hour in, i think

nope, that was jeff atwood. He must mention Joel in the last half hour somewhere.

Yes and even much of the criticism he's faced is the product of his success - it's not so much that what he wrote didn't have a good point, but more that he has been so successful at shaping the conversations about software development that people have taken his point too far without critical thinking, which inevitably results in backlash and people criticizing Joel instead of his followers who treat his deliberately exaggerated point a gospel.

He's also parlayed that into FogBugz, Stack Overflow and Trello. Hard to argue with success.

i will occasionally but "random" is relative. it will always be based on something, eg: the guy writes blog posts i like, the guy did a talk i liked, the book comes highly recommended by someone i respect, etc. sometimes the subject is niche enough that there are no mainstream/vetted alternatives available.

couldn't tell you, dunno who fred brooks is

happened to stumble across that video the other day, saw it had almost a million views. was pretty surprised by that so decided to watch. thought it was a pretty good video from my pov.

Also made me feel a little guilty toward the beginning when he talked about "ideas people"

This is on the short list of must-read books for anyone involved in creation of software:

I enjoy reading blog posts over books any day.

I'm going to be looking at the date of the blog post and factoring that into my decision when reading. Some material, the date doesn't matter but some it does and books are too damn long or searching is a pain or too much detail in book.
Also comments under blog post are worth reading and ebooks need to add a service to books for people commenting. Google is how I stumble onto what I'm looking for and google is better at indexing blog posts than books.

No matter what, you should use your extra time for doing whatever you enjoy; that adds some positive value to your life.

Usually doing something that is rewarding to you and if others find it rewarding that is a plus but never go for the latter before you enjoy doing x.

Guess having an active Github and Twitter can attract recruiters.

I got an email from a Google recruiter who stated they looked over my github and Twitter. And she wanted to talk about some mobile development opportunities at Google. How do I respond?? I don't graduate until 2017, reply back I'm not looking but if there are any internships, I would be interested? There's no way I can pass a Google interview after my last failure.

Give her the benefit of the doubt that she knows you don't graduate till 2017, or is that not obvious?

Mainly I enjoy working - learning, making useful things, and having ownership in the process. A couple of years ago, I wanted to get involved in open source stuff and even temporarily structured my job to give myself more time to pursue things like that but I've kind of backed away because a lot of communities seem toxic and a lot of the ones that aren't are corporate-driven and it seems crazy to contribute without getting paid one way or another. It's sad but it seems that money is what keeps people civil. My family situation is also such that I can't ignore $$$ and career considerations. I grew up kind of poor, so I'm probably more neurotic than I should be about finances. I'm also approaching middle age and far enough along in my career where advancement is increasingly difficult but not far enough along where I'd be satisfied not advancing in some way every year.

Aside from serving as a catalog for my thoughts, I was thinking that having even a marginally popular blog would be massively helpful if I were to eventually start a product company targeting devs or some kind of technical consultancy. Am I somewhat delusional for thinking that this is even a possibility?
