Yeah that's probably why they never tell you why they fire you (according to the glass door reviews). They just invite you to a meeting or show up at your desk someday with no explanation.

One of my friends was super excited about the unlimited maternity leave thing. I set her straight on that really quick.

What is the difference between vacation and maternity leave aside from shifting a few letters around?

Exactly. There's probably some unwritten rule that everyone knows like 6 weeks maternity leave and 2 weeks paternity leave.

What is the deal with Roblox? Why are they spamming the entire country with their job ads? Did they burn out all the talent in Silicon Valley or something?

I don't understand how this strategy is even sustainable long term. iojs released 3.0 yesterday, hurr durr I'll just go ahead and install it, breaks all my dependencies, have to roll back, can't even find iojs 2.5 easily, back to node!

I have an interview coming up. I was looking at glassdoor and the company has high ratings across the board, but then I looked at the interview section. People are openly accusing the company of being ageist.

The first indication is no one is over 30. They also ask interview questions like "would you like to come by our apartment for game night every week?" This question was called "awkward," which yeah, if they asked me that, I'd tell them I really hate watching sports, so sorry.

On the topic of ad blockers generally and iOS 9's specifically.

I've always been fascinated with the arms race between advertisers and ad blockers. Definitely see both sides of the issue. But something is going to have to change in the very near future.

People hate ads. All of them. The alternatives typically don't work well, such as paywalls to content. So what options are left?

Will there be a future in web browsing where you pay, say, a monthly fee for the ad-free version of chrome or Firefox? Google can act like a cable provider and have certain packages, like $12/year to get ad-free news sites, $5/month for ad-free YouTube, etc.

What sort of alternatives do y'all envision? Or do you think this is really an issue that needs solving?

I imagine whoever comes up with a good alternative to modern-day ads will make quite a pretty penny.
Boardgamegeek has a pay X/year and get the site add free model in place. I like that for forum/community type sites.
I gladly pay for it. And I also accept the pretty meh UI.

There's always going to be people who pay for good content (and accept if stuff is otherwise subpar) imo

I'm fairly sure in that context that game night means playing settlers of cataan or something Dave

I was thinking about that one too. I'd probably tell them I don't know how to play those games, which I'm sure they would say "We can teach you!"

I'd respond with: "I go ice skating every Saturday and Sunday. Would you care to join me every week?"

-- "I don't know how to ice skate"

I can teach you!

Here's a novel concept:

Lie

Tell them whatever they want to hear if it gets you the job.

I'm sure they can't fire you for not spending your free time the way they want you to.

I'll be sure to go in with face cream and piggy tails as well.

They don't really need a good reason to fire you, no more than I need a good reason to quit a job.

Hockey I guess. Not interested in playing the sport, but I was hoping to attend the officiating seminar this year, but I don't think that will happen.

Fundamentally, it is all the same. Of course, you can't do spinning jumps on hockey skates, but it takes at least a year to get to that level anyways. There's things you can't really do on figure skates either.

You shouldn't be getting rejected based on these questions. If you constantly only answer these with "I hate watching sports" or "this database schema sucks, I will answer your ****ty question only under protest" your interviewers aren't going to want to work with that.

You don't have to be rosy and gregarious and optimistic all the time, but if you can't get through a one hour interview without being antagonistic that's a huge red flag.

You realize I wouldn't really be antagonistic in an interview, right? Most of what I write here is tongue in cheek. I have no idea what I would say to that question. I wouldn't say yes.

But it is incredibly strange to me to see how many companies present themselves. Many places have these "why it is awesome to work here" employee testimonial videos and it is just... so weird. I was watching one video and one person cheerfully says "I have no idea how many hours I work here. I just love being here so much!"

"We work hard and we play hard!" should be bought by a copyright troll so they can start suing this statement into oblivion. I never seen anyone in an office that works as hard as I do; I prefer to go home and deflate.

All of this stuff plus the 5 step interview process makes applying to a company feel more like a hazing ritual from Hell Week than applying for a job. Sure, I don't want to be enemies with my coworkers like we all were at my last job, but I'm not looking for my chum pals and future ex-wife either. I really don't care if the company has free food, ping pong tables, allows everyone to bring pets, or weekend volleyball games. It's okay to wear sandals? If I took advantage of that one, the company would immediately reverse that policy.

Cultural fit is important. The interview process is trying to find people who fit culturally as much as technically. Great place to work videos are trying to make the company more appealing to the developers they are trying to attract. There are lots of places to apply so they're trying to make their dev job look more appealing. None of this seems difficult to understand. If they say they have a weekly game night ask them what games they play and seem interested. Have you never gone on a date?

Cultural fit is important to the level of, "will I want to kill this person by Friday?" It shouldn't be "Do I want to spend my ever waking hour with this person?" No one should have that expectation, even with dating. We call these type of people "needy" and "lonely" for a reason.

"Wow, a game night sounds really fun," while nodding with a smile on your face - positive answer, shows openness to new ideas, perfectly non-committal.

Always love the term "cultural fit" because its so shamelessly obvious code for "you have to be a normal American worker". Its not explicitly racist but there's no way someone with a thick Indian accent gets hired at a place like that, not unless there's no one else who can do the job.
