Content sites relying on ad or subscription income may benefit from utilising the same technique many sites use to get subscriptions.
Upon detecting an ad block, instead of showing the entire content, just show the opening paragraph or two or other parts grabbing attention.
Directly below that, they can then build in buttons to turn off the most popular ad blockers for that particular site.

It then all comes down to the pitch, or rather the tone thereof.
I have turned off my ad blocker for a very few sites where a) they detect it is on and b) they ask nicely to turn it off as they rely on the income to be able to afford offering their content.

With regards to the aggressive ads/techniques as mentioned above, if I come across them, I simply stop visiting that site.

Yea, it is very expensive to do it right, where you release an updated back-end with the same front-end, and then an optional updated front-end that users can "opt in" to.

If you don't want users to revolt and potentially leave, you have to test new versions and see if one takes on. If it doesn't, well there goes that effort.

Something strange is going on around his armpit, looks a bit like a poor photoshop. (Might just be a tattoo, idk.)

Overall your "obsession" with followers is more amusing than the fact that people are following random repos though :P

Having people follow your repo is totally normal. Even if they follow you personally. Stop freaking out :P. If you have followers, it means you are doing something right besides uploading random code that no one wants to use or even look at which is like 90% of github.

so i graduated last year with degree in computer science. Got a 2.1 (or B) from top 20 university in UK. Havent done any programming since then as ive been mostly focusing on poker but decided i would try get back into it and look for some freelance work. Dont mind about money i just wanted to create a portfolio so i was looking at the cheaper ones....So i google freelance work and took a quick look what people were asking for...problem is...i have literally no idea where to start on ANY of the projects (not web development projects).

Is this common for a graduate or am i just stupid? I dont get how people get into freelance work. Even for low pay stuff it seemed like people were asking for super advanced stuff

In case anyone wonders why I decided to get the hell out of L.A., this was a big part of it.

I submitted this to HN. I hope bad things happen to whoever this is.

I've been spending some time reading the reviews on glassdoor. I really feel like I dodged a bullet with the Netflix thing. Culture of fear with politics playing a huge role in who gets let go. Snapchat sounds pretty crappy too - which makes me happy. Weirdly Tinder only has like two reviews. Hulu has reached out to me and that sounds pretty stale.

I really feel like where I'm at is about as good as it's going to get for me - very good salary - great people - new technologies- close to my house. Kinda bittersweet about that. But I am really glad I didn't bolt for Netflix. Ugh.

Shot in the dark, but has anyone been able to take raw YUV data and convert it to video on iOS? I know with openGL you can do it, but I don't want to go down that route if necessary. I was planning to use CVPixelBufferCreate but I wouldn't be able to turn it into CIImage which I need to display the video.

Speaking of job culture:

http://www.spiceworks.com/jobs/

^^ find the video, I guess

http://www.spiceworks.com/jobs/meet-the-team/

^^ You have to pose for a picture for their website and write something "fun" about yourself?

Their canned rejection letter was probably the worst one I ever read. I think someone here said the idea was to give the applicant "closure." This company didn't get the memo.

We have one of those types around here. What I've heard is that they use their "we're so cool" stuff as a way to pay well under market rate and its a churn factory. I'll pass.

Software Developer is 87k on glassdoor. Not sure what market rate is here, but that doesn't sound too bad considering how cheap everything is out here.

Didn't apply for software though.

How do you get a best place to work trophy anyways? To me, it looked they they wanted work and social life to be one in the same, which always comes across creepy.

I've seen this headline in about 20 different places in the last couple days: http://techcrunch.com/2015/08/04/net...leave-program/

I'll give Netflix credit, they have a great PR department. They already have unlimited vacation which absolutely no one ever takes. Now they add another perk which no one will ever take and get all kinds of free recruiting advertisement out of it. I'm sure the employees who actually work there are just rolling their eyes at the whole thing.

I have like 5 weeks of backed up vacation right now. My work could give me unlimited vacation and it wouldn't change one thing. Basically what they're getting out of is paying for back PTO time when you leave - which as a company who constantly fires people, is a pretty big relief.

lol. actually taking advantage of that, and the suing them when they finally fired you, would be awesome.
