Sure, that's why I have different passwords for everything. Well if it's a site that I don't care about, I use the same password

1Password with the db on Dropbox has been what I'm using for the last couple of years. Apple is getting better at generating and managing passwords for web sites but it doesn't work for server logins. Putting the password into Text Expander, again with the db on Dropbox, lets me type a unique character string in and have it replaced with hYp;giqkV10EPJR or whatever the current strong password is.

The problem is that I can't keep track of all my different passwords and I don't have a single device with me at all times (nor do I want to have one) so I have to rely on an online service in some way.

A reputable 3rd party company that makes security their primary focus is 'safe enough' for me. And overall its probably at least as safe as any solution where I manage encryption or rely on 3rd party software to manage encryption and then rely on another 3rd party to store my encrypted data.

Used Keypass for years, keep it on Dropbox. Works great for me. Trust it with a lot.

For people with Keypass on Dropbox - how does that work with mobile devices? Like if I'm travelling and want access to something and all I have is my phone/tablet am I out of luck?

Edit: Looks like there are options.

Welcome spaceman,

I'm also just starting out. It was pointed out to me to start out with Python as first language. It's very beginner friendly and they offer free courses at edx.org

Make sure to take THE MIT course. It's very good with a bunch of exercises for you to get acclimated.

Anyone read Michael O. Church (Quora, blog, etc.)? Pretty much everything he says resonates with me. Silicon valley is such a ****ing joke. The idea that the top of the salary range for expert programmers is like $150K-ish would make me insta-change careers if it weren't for the fact that Quixotism seems to be what provides me fulfillment in life.

I particularly appreciate his analogies to Hollywood culture. The path to success as a programmer is not through brilliant coding. It's through relentless marketing and self-promotion. The only way to make enough money to even be able to afford to live in any major city is to try to become a celebrity. I agree when he proposes that I, as a programmer, ought to have an agent. Does anyone know how I can find an agent who wants to take 15% of the fair market value for my contributions, in exchange for actually securing a contract of that value? (BTW, I don't even have a LinkedIn, GitHub, or anything else that could make it possible for someone to determine from a google search that I'm an extremely skilled, knowledgeable, and experienced programmer).

Nobody? I guess I'll just have to play with it to find out!

I've read a few blog posts and notice his posts here and there on hacker news. I like reading his cynical anti establishment rants but he's an idiot for using his real name. In one thread it came up that he was basically fired from one company after being labeled a trouble maker.

Dear nginx,
Why do you output your version to stderr and not stdout.

I have a phone interview for a data job coming up.

Basically, we are talking about TBs of data which needs to be cleaned, munged, work faster, and be more maintainable. In other words, it could be a huge mess and I'd love this job.

I'm thinking about the questions I should ask, and considering some curve-balls that might get thrown at me. From what I've gathered so far, I need to be darn good at SQL and Excel.

I've been exploring their site, and I've been mentally mapping out how the schema may be laid out. I don't really have much else to go on at this point. I think that, for a self-taught person, I have some decent experience working on databases and solving difficult problems with SQL, but now we are talking about scale, which I don't have much knowledge about. I believe my strong suits are designing the systems and creatively querying data sets to get interesting answers.

Quick, name a career beside doctor where you can top out at over 150k a year by being an individual contributor.

I think you have bigger problems if you aren't able to support yourself on a 150k salary.

I just skimmed a couple of his blog posts and he genuinely seems kind of dumb (in the real world sense).

First, people that think the developers are the people generating all of the value in a company are deluded. Obviously, we're super critical - but so are most of the other people in that company (at least, a successful company).

It also sort of reads like the standard anti-VC establishment rant of "Why do you get all this equity when you don't do any work!!!!". As if the value of the money that they put up, usually at pretty high risk, isn't worth anything.

But, ultimately, the idea that 150K isn't a good salary for a job that millions of people can do well with only 5-10 years of training/experience is kind of ridiculous. And if you have the specialized skills to actually put you in a much smaller class of people - yes you're probably going to have do some work to market/sell yourself. And if you choose to not do that work yourself - yes you're going to have give up a good chunk of money to someone else to do it for you.

Am I totally misunderstanding his position?

really stupid question #1: I have an old computer that was infected badly. i bought a new comp so i was wondering if my computer is infected with a virus if i take out the harddrive and replace it with a new hard rive and put linux on it, will it not be infected anymore? What other parts of the computer could be infected by a virus?

I basically have read about being a website designer and the skills i always hear about are

1. java/javascript
2.html/css
3. knowing linux and how to build a server

so i was thinning about fixing my old commuter put linux n it and turning into a server, but i basically dont know how to do that either. if my linux computer is a server and it gets infected could the other computers in my apartment get infected?

I completely agree with this. The more you work closely with lots of different positions (and the more open minded you are), the more you'll see their value. Companies take a lot of different skill sets to function well, and programmers are relatively generic in some ways. The value of a super talented sales guy is way (particularly when selling expensive solutions), way higher than basically any programmer.

Seems like things that can really separate one programmer from another will often lead that programmer into more of a management role (communication).

$150k is a huge amount of money at the end of the day, and most people earning it aren't nearly as special as they think. It took me 1 year and about $500 in online resources to get a job making $75k (from functionally no work experience), then another year to be making far more. I don't think I do anything particularly special.

bryce,

you and giz should collaborate. think she's going to take what i assume you're taking this semester, if you're going where i would guess you're going, which is also the path i've been going down

from talking to people at work, you probably want a good foundation of c#, html5/css, and maybe some back end stuff depending on the role you want to do, like sql

Other people, please correct me if i'm wrong as i'm extremely new to all this too

Additionally, don't try to bite off more than you can chew wrt asking questions. I've been trying to avoid this area while i'm still very green (unless i have a question i absolutely can't find out thru googling) because it's super easy to get overwhelmed when you're new

But stick with it! It's very rewarding when you finally start making things do stuff on your own!

I'd think it's a very small %. Basically "Senior SE" at Netflix or similar places that pay absurd salaries. I heard one director of QA and netflix was making like 750k.
