So I'm looking to make a personal website, and would like to ask about what technologies I should look into.

Basically just a site for personal marketing, will have a few pages for about me, resume, etc. and later would like to add a blog.

Would like to learn about web dev. in the process, but am not looking to make it from scratch.

What technologies would you recommend I look into? Currently I know next to nothing about web dev.

FWIW have already purchased a domain & hosting from Go Daddy.

I would have advised you to not buy hosting at all, and certainly not until you have a site already built and ready to deploy. If you're only going to get a handful of visitors, as you would with a portfolio/resume page, there are places where you can host for free like Heroku. You can host static sites on Github pages for free (that's where I have my portfolio page) and I think they support blog functionality. But if you're doing this to learn how to develop dynamic sites, that's probably not a good option. If your goal is to learn web dev, you want ruby/rails, python/django, php/cakephp, etc.

You should have asked your question before doing this.

Back in ... '03? I cracked a trial version of flash (dont think they called it cs at the time) with a dl'ed keygen and did some animations for school or w/e. It was eZ. Now I have the urge to learn actionscript but after 5 min of googleing it looks like its not as easy as it used to be to get ahold of a free version of flash.

All I want to do is use the program to learn the language (in the same way that I used VS express 2005 to learn C++). I dont want to use it to make some something or use it to make money or anything. What should I do?

was thinking about sending them an email and just asking for a copy for 2-3 months

can you still get cs3 for free? try that.

also actionscript is basically javascript so yeah.

isn't flash+actionscript basically dead at his time?

Yep. 100% not the direction the web is going, so any energies you spent learning it would probably be better spent elsewhere

Good call. I spent like 20 minutes derping around until I realized I was on the foundation 3 customize screen, instead of foundation 4 (which the foundation gem for rails was using).

Now my compressed stylesheet is like 30kb.

Yeah. Are you saying there is a free option available for hosting a site at a custom domain with multiple pages?

Not for a custom domain, but free hosting is fairly readily available. Also, GoDaddy is notorious for being an awful company to deal with, and many people wont use their services on principle. Do a google for 'godaddy horror stories'.

Yes for custom domain. My github pages site has a custom domain. Heroku has an addon that allows custom domains if you have fewer than 50,000 queries per month.

I pay namecheap $10 a year and point my domain to heroku. The sites are fast as long as the free dyno isn't sleeping. Seriously considering moving over to AWS though.

Probably using mysite.heroku or something.

Oh you have to pay for the domain. But the hosting using your custom domain can be free.

Googled that, yea definitely not ideal. They claim to have good customer service on their website, but obv. can't trust their site for unbiased info.

I think I'll use Wordpress to get the site and the first few pages up and running. Looks like it's beginner-friendly. Anyone have experience using / customizing it?

A good rule of thumb is don't get your domains where you get your hosting.

Another good rule of thumb is don't get anything from godaddy, (see earlier post).

I'm not sure if you can get free hosting, but for a few bucks a month you'll get more than enough for what you described.

Can't you just make a request to your server every few minutes or however long the time out is before it sleeps? You could setup something automated to do this.

Interesting story on how you got there or just a standard path?

Nothing inherently interesting, similar story to goblue. Masters at depaul with no prior experience, found this job through a career fair and did alright on a brutal 4 hour interview.

Yup, I've done this for a few sites that we don't want to be slow but have little traffic. We use ping doom so I did it through that but there have to be a bunch of different options here.

Edit: Pingdom, but ping doom sounds awesome.
