Would it be out of place to ask if I could come in again? I really hate conference call speaker phone phone interviews.
You can politely tell her that you are enthusiastic about the opportunity/company and would be happy to come in again and directly meet the managers. Unless they are using the phone as another screening, and will call you in if they like you. That is how my current job went. 1/2 hour screening with HR, followed by 1 hour screening with hiring manager. Then they flew me in for 4 hour in person interview.

What are the odds of getting an internship in the summer as a incoming junior who has only taken a few basic CS classes (intro to programming, data structures, etc)?

School is good and pretty well recruited from and I know people get internships from there as incoming juniors, but I'm still thinking maybe with that little coursework the odds aren't great. What other things could someone work on in their own time to increase their chances?

Learn more languages? Create their own applications? Contribute to open source software?

Thanks.

I get the feeling that having your own projects that you can show off goes a pretty long way.

I got that internship in large part because of having my own projects and some code on github. It probably helped that I was carrying a brick with "Introduction to Algorithms" written on it as well. The guy was looking more for an engineer than a programmer. Not sure if I qualify as either, to be honest.

BTW. Introduction to Algorithms is a truly amazing feat of awesome. The effort that went into the book is unfathomable to me.

I'm sick and tired of these garbage Dell keyboards. I used one at the last job and it was a fair bit of finger-mashing murder. Used on at the internship, and that was pretty miserable. My current job has them now and I am doing a TON of typing on it, and I just want to throw the thing against the wall.

I'm thinking about buying a Das Keyboard to use there. It is pretty noisy at work anyways. Although it is a work investment, I feel like it will be well worth it since, if I'm going to be doing office work for the next n years, I should have the pleasure of working with a nice tool.

Do you guys bring your own keys to work? Or what do you guys use at work? Surely, programming full time on a Dell has to be miserable.

several of my colleagues have das keyboards. seems they are pretty love/hate.

if you have a grown-up job, get your employer to buy you whatever keyboard you like best. if you're a contractor or whatever, then sure, bring your own. whatever you do, take care of your wrists/hands/fingers; you will need them for a long time and you're not getting any younger (i say this as a nascent graybeard).

Every employer I've worked for had one thing in common... I would have to buy my own.

well... lol i guess.

on the plus side, that frees you up to buy this one guilt-free:

If my wrists didn't balk at the orientations needed for non-split keyboards I'd consider one of those.

On the minus side, I have to spend an egregious chunk of my check on it. I'm leaning toward getting the obnoxiously loud version.

Looks like I can get one for $120. I think I'm going to place my order tomorrow. I'm listening to youtube videos to get a comparison between the "soft" and "loud," but their both pretty friggin' loud. I wish there was a store out here were I could just go, try one out, and pick on up, but there isn't.

Not sure if I could adjust between an ergo and my laptop. I love my laptop keys. They have a nice clack as well.

I used this and like it (Trust slimline aluminum 1800s):

I'm kind of in the market for an ergonomic keyboard though

They provide business software and host it for you. The idea is that you don't have to worry about maintaining servers and so forth and can just use the software (software as a service...hosted in the infamous cloud). They started with CRM (customer relationship management...basically your business contacts, how to reach them, what customers you have in the pipeline etc...like the name of the company suggests stuff your salesforce might find handy).
They have probably added other stuff like accounting and so forth by now. If you handle all business needs in one package it's known as http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enterpr...ource_planning

There's also an "App store" of sorts where you can buy 3rd party enhancements of their product.

We use salesforce for support ticket tracking and customer management. They are pretty huge so knowing how to customize it wouldn't be the worst sill you could pick up, I know we pay contractors to fix stuff. The only downside is you'd have to be working in Salesforce all the time...

Tyler & others;

Do people at your work use the clicky or "quiet" das keyboard? Does the noise irritate you? My current job is pretty much endless typing all day. How quick will my coworkers want to kill me if I get the clicky one?

hmm the place I'm (second) interviewing at on Monday works heavily with salesforce but was voted the #1 best place to work in my major metropolitan area so I wonder how miserable that will be. But yeah free beer on Friday and all that stuff. I'm sure I'll find a way to blow it as usual though.

dave,

there are at least a few who use clicky style. i haven't really noticed, but we work on big open floors so the ambient noise level is pretty high and keyboard noise rarely bothers me anyway.

(now the guy who came down and started high-fiving everyone on his team five yards away while i was trying to explain something technical to our new folks...)

So I don't have much experience cutting up a PSD, but I'm going to try and create a responsive site for my friend. Anyone have a good resource for getting started? I'm not supporting old browsers.

I have a bit of experience with CSS, just not from the ground up really.
