The more I think about this last console generation, it was really brutal for everyone. The 360 and PS3 were just too close on paper... so you ended up with the expectation of the same experience on either box even though they were architecturally very different. All this did was split the user base in two and require that publishers/developers spend double the engineering effort for the same sales. Every single "cross-platform" game was made worse because of this.

Everybody lost... publishers/developers made less money, gamers got fewer choices and worse games.
I'm thinking it is about time for a new console. Seems to be the pattern that every 10 years or so, counsels rise and fall in and out of favor. Think Atari, Sega, etc. Wii revolutionized gaming the same way the original Atari, Sega, and PS did.

The fact that there was able to be two coexisting consoles for so long shows that innovation and interest has stagnated. There is seldom a need for advancement and innovation if there isn't a constant thread of obsolescence around the bend.

I will say though, that I hated the fact that I had to choose my console on a selection of games and game types I wanted. During the 90s, I dived for a PS because I preferred roll-playing games and they clearly had the best of the crop (Final Fantasy, Xenogears <--- daveT's avatar).

I bet Apple would be able to do a console, but I imagine they'd make it too painful for developer houses to do anything serious with it if you judge their treatment of i-apps.

Long Live the Apple Bandai Pippin'

Rumor has it that Microsoft is pouring major $ into biometrics research to do the type of things you mention in your post.

Set up a VM environmant with some vulnerable Linux (used to be Damn Vulnarable Linux dunno what took its place) and BackTrack Linux as the attacker and google a bit. Def. the most fun way of learning.

Probably just going through some Armitage howtos/videos etc. is the most fun

Learn enough C/ASM to code a buffer overflow or format string attack...dunno it all depends on which direction you want to go. Smashing the stack for fun and profit used to be the go to phrack article but the outlined method is unlikely to work on any recent Linux distribution (still a good exercise and rprobably works on said insecure Linuxes).

So, the PS4 dev kits that showed an AMD A10 weren't that far from the reality? This is I imagine amazing news for AMD, who I love to see succeed. An A10 with 8GB GDDR5 should be pretty decent, but it's not exactly cutting edge in PC realm even today (it is however quite high on my shopping list for a PC upgrade for a cheap general purpose box). I can't see it having a 5+ year shelf life as a gamer?

As to Google consoles, we should be getting them sooner rather than later, and probably a lot of them! Ouya and Nvidia Shield, for two examples.

Ubuntu phone if it ever gets released might come closeish...probably possible to turn it into that eventually with some programming.

The funniest thing about the PS4 specs to me is the lack of 4k resolution game support. A few months ago everyone said they would rather have a 4k system because content would be available shortly and displays would fall to reasonable prices.

Consoles not supporting 4k games is pretty much a guaranteed ticket that it won't become anywhere near mainstream for at least another 8+ years.

We're a long, long way from maxing out 1080P and the bottleneck is GPU and arists, not screen resolution. Pre-rendered 3d models in 720P still look better than anything you can render in real-time in 4K or 1080P right now.

Yeah, I'm a strong advocate for just improving displays at resolutions we already have like getting oleds into the main stream instead of 4k LCDs.

It was funny because everyone else wanted the exact opposite.

I dont think 4k support was ever going to get much serious consideration. This generation was supposed to be all about 1080p, but only a handful of games ever even tried to make that happen. Most games are already cheating 720p and 99% of the population couldnt tell (or doesnt care) about the difference.

I hope they make improvements to desktop monitors.

I have a 27 inch 120hz 2ms response time 1080p screen and a 2560x1600 30 inch dell 3011. The 27 inch is solely for gaming, and looks pretty terrible for normal use. The 2560x1600 makes games look amazing, feels laggy after playing at 120hz and a 2ms response time.

Also, my retina mbp makes text on everything look terrible.

So basically, wtb a 3840x2400 120hz 24 inch or something. Or even a 2560x1600 120hz monitor. I doubt we'll see anything fun like that for a bit though.

After I got my retina mbp I think I checked chrome and eclipse updates 3-4 times a week for retina support.

Anybody tried out jQuery Mobile 1.3?

Version 1.3 was released 4 days ago. Been playing with the demo on my phone, and I'm impressed. The progress made since v1.0 was released in Nov 2011 is incredible.

Haven't tried the latest version, but I built something with whatever was the latest version a few weeks ago, and it's a nice enough library but has problems on Android with responsiveness and animations. In the future, I will be using jqMobi, which apparently just got bought by intel and is intel app framework now:

Haven't used jqMobi yet, though I have heard good things.

Lemme ask you this (or anyone else) -- in the longer term, say 1 year from now, assuming jqMobi is currently better, do you think jQuery Mobile will become better?

My thinking is that the jQuery team is good enough, and big enough, that they have to have the long term advantage. jQuery is the de facto standard for JS libraries. I can't help but think that jQuery Mobile is eventually going to become the same thing for HTML5 mobile frameworks simply because it's based on the same foundation with the same development and oversight.

wife looking to go to school for web/graphic design in Vancouver, has anyone heard of either of these schools/programs? VanArts or BCIT (New Media/Web Dev degree)

I work really close to the Art Institute of Vancouver. I have no idea what their reputation is, but it looks like they have some graphics design courses, probably worth checking out (http://www.artinstitutes.edu/vancouver/design-502.aspx)

Edit: just realised you already mentioned VanArts in your post

After all my ebay bashing, I have an interesting situation.

I returned the book and got a refund after sending my tracking number. I now have busted up box with a Return to Sender card attached to it. I sent it to the correct address and everything. I wrote to the company and they told me to not worry about it and either keep, donate, or sell the book and don't worry about sending it back.

I don't like looking a gift horse in the mouth, but I don't like the feeling of receiving something for free despite my full attempts to be honest. I don't know, I feel lucky but at the same time, I wish I didn't have this book in my possession. What to do? My first reaction is to write the company back and tell them I really wish they'd accept the return and pay the shipping C.O.D.

Visually, the main difference between CRLS 2 and 3 is the psuedocode in 3 looks more "Pyhthonic" and perhaps slightly harder / easier to read. I know that 3 has parallel algorithms in there somewhere. Regardless, both versions is more logic and math based than a "cookbook" format. In fact, there are not that many straight-up algorithms, leaving the student to figure out the algorithms himself (here is a description of Selection Sort, write the code). Since it's definitely easier to read in paper form for me, I may as well keep it and reference other stuff from the PDF when I need or want to. So much of it is pencil-and-paper work and I'd rather not sit at my computer doing that stuff.

Eh... what to do?
