Me and my flatmates just got an N64, had a few more games come through on ebay today:

Anyone else got one? We're having an absolute blast on it, best games so far are Mario Party and F-Zero X.

F-Zero X really is a remarkable game considering the N64 only has a 93.75mhz cpu, very smooth and very fun!

Luckily the N64 we got off ebay came with the 4MB RAM expansion lol!

man, this brings me back to my grade/high school days. my friend had an N64

the best game was Mario Kart 64, great multiplayer game, once of the best ever. then again, i was a huge fan from the original Mario Kart for Super Nintendo so i guess its no surprise.

similarly Twisted Metal for the PS1

+100 to all of this

I still have my N64, but I live alone and its not quite as much fun without friends around all the time.

Never heard of lylatwars, wtf is that?

I recommend Goldeneye, Mario, Mario Kart, Star Fox and Pilot Wings

Lylat wars is an incredible game

We have Mario Cart, but honestly I never got it. Diddy Kong racing ftw

N64 imo is the best console to play between 4 friends and some beer

Some of these games go for a lot of money on ebay, SmashBros cartridge only will cost you ~£30. About the same as when it first came out! Any Mario Party game seems to be £20+

Zelda on N64 was a great game.

Surprised Golden Eye has not had a mention yet. Surly one of the most played games ever on N64?

I almost bought Zelda, but don't think I have enough time to commit to actually getting anywhere with it lol.

Goldeneye imo is a landmark FPS in computer history, really incredible game. Unfortunately for me things have moved on so far now when I play it it's just not the same, even with all the nostalgia. Controls are kinda horrible and the framerate is pretty bad. My memories of it are tainted!

I still have an N64, and a SNES, and a NES, and a Megadrive (genesis) somewhere in my pile of old stuff I think my brother actually has the N64, it was his IIRC. All originals from whenever they were new. Such an awesome time in history. Got a ton of old PC too, but some of those picked up cheap later on. Favourite useless pile of junk, original Pentium (Pro?) 60 MHz Dual CPU workstation by Compaq. Those chips a huge, and have a lot of gold on them!

forgot about Star Fox, def another good one

i didnt care for Goldeneye for multiplayer, but one player was good. competitive first person shooters need a mouse

man its been so long, as i remember its basically a racing game with weapons and powerups. you could get powerups to go faster, etc. but you could also get shells to shoot at other cars to make them spin out. the green shells shoot straight, the red shells home in and follow the target. so in addition to driving the course well, you had to be aware of picking up or defending against the items.

i think there was also a mode where all you do is fight, you dont worry about driving a course and finishing first

the ghost course from the original SNES mario kart was sick, i remember playing that level sooooo many times trying to get the best time. you had to purposely send the car into a drift to pick up speed and then do some type of hop with the L/R buttons

Loved this game, especially the create a track feature. While Goldeneye looks a little ragged today, don't forget about its spiritual successor Perfect Dark. That game was fantastic. In addition to having a great 1-player, multiplayer, and co-op mode, it also had a absolutely insane scenario builder that made for some great replay value.

this.

When I was a kid, I must have spent vast amounts of time on the ghost circuit 1 and mario circuit 1, doing nothing but trying to get 0.1 seconds of best lap. Both of those in a Bowser/Donkey Kong, required almost a continual drift around the entire thing for all laps, was so awesome to hook up a perfect time trial!

might have to fire up the emulators lol. zsnes or snes9x, can't remember. there's probably a vastly superior one by now!

Seems like a pretty solid site for learning whatever.
Eh yeah if it wasn't clear I'm in the "keep the tests camp". Integration tests are pretty important especially if your code interfaces with other stuff that tends to break things.

With all respect as a long-time and still-current psql user... who the flip uses psql who cares all that much about speed?
PSQL can be blazing fast...alas it takes some database wizzardry. Not overnormalizing too much usually helps a ton already. I've heard really good things about their support with regards to performance tuning but it'll cost you.

Regarding commute. It's about 1h from train station untill I'm in the office for me (45 minutes train + 15 minutes underground and walking) + another 20 minute walk to the train station. So basically 2h and 40minutes each day. I can come in whenever I want (only exception being the lecture of course, I can shedule my office hours flexibly if I want) and could work from home ~90% but I still chose to do the commute. I love the walks they clear the head and I tend to have pretty good ideas during them and I usually get in some good reading on the train rides. Obviously I could just walk and read anyways but this way it's a nice rythm.

Lol some people are lame and have no values. Out them imo.

Yeah I have a retro collection of sorts. I actually prefer stuff that's even older. NES and SNES FTW. Of that age the game I tend to enjoy most is multiplayer Chu-Chu Rocket on the Dreamcast

Didn't age well imo. We used to play it forever and ever but I can't get back into it. I have a hard time even imagining how we played it in 4-split mode on the old TVs haha.

Hah, exactly this. I remember finding out that on 150cc Bowser had enough speed to take the short cut just by jumping. It wasn't really worth it except when playing against someone else and you were a little behind on the last lap.

I was that PITA kid:

You never met him before but you come by because your friend has this friend...

You bring your favorite game over than you spent the past year mastering.

You brag about how awesome you are.

You play the PITA

You get creamed in 3.4 seconds even though he never played it before.

I generally beat games too quickly to get much enjoyment out of them. Actually, my avatar is from, IMO, the greatest game ever created. I haven't played too much since then though, but it still holds the top 5 in many "best of" lists. It was so good that it was hard to conceive of anything better.

Most challenging game I recall playing is Death Trap Dungeon. Not because it was so difficult, but because the difficulty slope was long and arduous with a very long game play. I took 2 weeks away from it, and the level I was at was too difficult to play on after I returned to it, though it wasn't hard when I left.

I wasn't good at sports games or first-person shooters. God, I hate those genres so much.

You can actually play these old n64 games against other people online with the emulator project64k. Super Smash Bros is by far the most popular game but I've seen people playing Mario Kart as well. Playing online causes some lag and input delay but still can be fun.

I play Super Smash Bros all the time still and I've been playing through the N64 Zelda games recently. I use my n64 way more often than my Xbox360.

I just meant that nobody can beat me at Mario kart for the SNES.

You can usually just look at the network requests the page is making in the developer tools and figure it out that way.
