Running a 30" monitor and another monitor off one graphics card Running a 30" monitor and another monitor off one graphics card

I was asked this question by PM, and thought it might be useful for others in the future:

Hey, you explained that you needed a dual-link dvi video card in order to run the Dell 30" and I have a PNY 8500 GT video card, which is dual-link dvi. It is currently powering two samsung 204BWs. I was wondering if the video card would simultaneously run the Dell and one of the 204BWs. thanks man.
my answer:

yeah, it should be able to.

on a normal dvi plug, about half the little pins are not actually live. for most uses, that's fine, since you only need half the pins to run the relatively high resolutions just beyond 1920x1200 (i forget the exact numbers off the top of my head).

however, when you have the behemoth of the dell 3007, which has 2560 x 1600 pixels (4,096,000 pixels in total) your pc needs to send much more data down the cable to control each and every pixel. thus, it needs all the pins on the plug to be active, which is what dual-link dvi means.

so, there's no reason that a dual-link dvi card with two dvi plugs shouldn't be able to run two monitors. of course, your performance might suffer, but that's unclear.

I'm the one who PMed Josem and I have another question actually. My card has one DVI, one VGA out, and when I tried hooked up one Samsung 204BW via vga and one via DVI I could only get the one via DVI working. I then hooked up both via VGA, one with a dvi->vga dongle thingy and then they both worked, so I just figured you can't have one of each at the same time, thus asked you this question. I plan on using the samsung as an internet/movie monitor and the dell for poker, so it's np if it doesn't work ill jus pick up another vid card. I'll report back when I know for sure (waiting for stars check, then order monitor, such anxiety), unless you know for sure and why it didnt work earlier. werd. thx for the help though.
