I'm obviously not saying that this level of privacy is usually necessary and that Picassa and the like are unsuitable for your holiday pics etc. Its just that OP said privacy was important so I mentioned this - as depending on just how important privacy is these things can become concerns.
Thanks.

Is the privacy better on Skydrive then?

My guess is that Skydrive is similar to Picassa in terms of security though like I say, thats a guess, so if someone says different I wouldn't argue.

Amazon are getting in on the act with Cloud Drive (well...arguably, they got the online storage business started)

5 GB Free
20 GB $20 / year
50 GB $50 / year
100 GB $100 / year
200 GB $200 / year
500 GB $500 / year
1000 GB $1000 / year

Prices are far too expensive for average consumers, IMO.

Bump. I have roughly 500gb that I'd like to back up online. Are there any new players in the online storage business who are affordable, reliable, and suit my needs?

Amazon Cloud Drive? It's about $1/GB per year. https://www.amazon.com/clouddrive/learnmore

You could go with a much cheaper file sharing site like Mediafire, Filesonic, Dropbox, etc. but the redundancy is going to be nowhere near what Amazon, Skydrive, etc. can offer.

No one has mentioned backblaze as an option, a photographer friend of mine uses this and she has data in the terabytes.

Does anyone have any experience with Spideroak?

Looks really interesting for my needs. Backs up and can synchronize across computers, plus has a zero knowledge encryption policy. Synced files only count once towards your storage ($10 per 100GB). Doesn't auto delete files you delete from your computer (has recycle bin) and has versioning. If it works how it says it does, especially if the syncing works properly - which is a big concern for me - it's basically exactly how I think backup should work.

Bit pricey compared to unlimited backup options but good value versus syncing equivalents. For how much I want to back up it's fine though, thinking of giving it a go. Any thought/comments on whether to use or avoid it?
