Power connections (new system)

Power connectors have changed since I built my last system. I'm not sure what to do about the 8-pin connector next to the CPU. The manual says Intel recommends a 2x4 connection with an Extreme Edition CPU. To me, this insinuates I should be using a different connection for my i7 920 processor.
I don't know if I should be plugging in only a single 2x2 (4-pin) connector, both to make a 2x4 connection, or for that matter anything at all. Can someone help me with this? I've got an email in to Gigabyte but I figure I'll get a quicker response here.

It's also my first time installing PCI-E video cards (yeah my system's old). I bought a Diamond Multimedia HD 5850 and if I understand correctly it's two cards combined. I see two 6-pin 2x3 sized Molex connectors on the card so I assume I just need to connect two separate power connectors to the card.
I'm just doublechecking to be safe so I don't fry the thing by mistake. Apparently the makers were a little high when they wrote the manual because they forgot to provide instructions on how to connect the power.

The CPU connector for a x58 board is 8pin. You need a PSU that supports the EPS standard (in addition to ATX).
The CPU connector may come as one 8pin connector or as a 2 x 4pin. If your PSU doesn't support EPS, it has only a 4pin connector for the CPU. The 4pin CPU connector will fit only in one way in the 8pin (female) connector on the mobo. It should work. But no promises from me and I wouldn't overclock.
As for the graphics card: no, the 5850 is just a single-GPU card. It just simply needs so much juice under load that it requires 2 PCI Express connectors (2 x 6pin AFAIK). These are NOT Molex connectors. (Edit: RTFM. I'm sure it will explain that the card requires PCIe, not Molex connectors.)

Thanks for helping, I got the terminology of the connectors confused while googling a website on power connectors. (I swear, the sparse manual includes nothing on connecting power in their installation instructions.)
