I thought I'd ask here before I go out and buy a new 30''. I have a Gateway 30" monitor. It basically worked fine for about a year other than occasionally turning black for a second after starting a video and then coming back with the message "Your display diver stopped working and has recovered." This was actually very common.

About a month ago sometimes the screen would randomly get blurry. If I would turn it off it would come back on and be fine. This wouldn't happen that often, maybe a few times in the last month or so. Now yesterday the screen starting flickering green. Again if I turn the monitor off for a little while it seems to fix itself but not for long. It seems to only work for maybe five minutes and then turns green again.

I hooked my ps3 up with an hdmi cable to see if it was my dvi cable and it did the same thing so I guess it isn't my computer and it isn't my cable. Is the monitor busto? Anyone else have this problem?

Green flashes across screen. Then after a while it will sometimes just turn a completely greenish tint.

I've seen things like this happen when a connection is loose. Sometimes I'll accidentally kick the cable under my desk and see the colors go out of whack.

how hot is the room? If leaving it turned off for a bit helps it could be overheating. Try opening a window and putting a fan blowing on the back of it and see if it helps it go longer without flashing green.

This is apparently a common problem based on Amazon reviews and other googling. Numerous people report green flickering failure after about a year of use and Gateway blames the user. You may be ****ed.

Yeah it seems like it may be an overheating issue. I don't think it's a connection issue since the same thing happens with the hdmi connection. I'll see if cooling it helps. Thanks.

I have a similar problem with my 4/5 year old Compaq Presario laptop. This last week I have started to get lots of green & red flashing on the screen.

I read this article about failure of colour guns, and it kinda sounds like what's happening to me.

My question is, is it worth me taking it to a repairer, or does this spell the start of the end of my laptop?

hope you don;t mind me jumping on this thread, but thought it better than starting a new one.

thx

Almost certainly not worth repairing. Usually what those repair shops do is they find a screen or whatever pulled from a used system where another part failed, and the part is typically on the pricey side. Then of course they charge for labor, tax, etc, and you wind up spending $150+ on the repair. Based on the brand and age, that's probably more than your particular laptop is worth.

You could try finding a replacement part yourself on ebay or whatever, but even then it's probably not worth it. 4-5 years is a respectable run for a laptop. An entry-level laptop today can be had for under $400 easily new, and will probably give you a very good upgrade in performance.
