You don't have to use MSE, there's tons of free alternatives. Most dynamic testing sites like AV Test will give their grades for a range of them. Offhand I know AV Test is heavily weighted to how an AV handles zero-day attacks specifically, but w/e. Every other month there seems to be a new "best" antivirus. Just pick one you like and take normal common-sense precautions.

what Gonso said

Don't spend time picking an antivirus, Spend time putting other layers of security, like avoiding shady sites, no pirated software, no admin account for daily use, good backups.
