So, Microcenter is offering MBP 13 inch one with i5 processor for $999.

Is this the best deal possible for this model? anyone have an idea if apple will offer student discount AND an ipod touch for students if i wait?

is this the new sandybridge model with thunderbolt?

I think the ipod touch deal is pretty common around september, but I don't remember if they disallow the student discount during that time

I think this year they are doing a $100 gift card instead of any kind of iPod.

Yes, it's the sandybridge model with thunderbolt. What do you recommend? Should I buy it? I'm not in any urgent need for laptop but if people think this is the best deal i'll get on a MBP, I don't wanna miss the chance.

May as well wait until Lion comes out. The upgraded Airs may be spectacular.

would i get as a good a deal if i wait though? upgrading to lion would cost like $40? they're selling these for $1199 on apple website. if i buy this for $999 and upgrade to lion later, it's still a great deal, no?

EDIT: Upgrade to OS Lion is FREE if you buy MBPs after June 6th. And apple will price match the best deal. So, I can walk into an apple store, show them micro center deal and get it for same price there.

It's up to you, I could never stand buying old hardware two weeks before new hardware shows up.

I have the 13" Air and use a 15" low res MBP from work and much prefer the 13" screen. It's newer than the MBP but the higher resolution (they have the same res but the 13" screen is much smaller) is really noticeable.

kerowo - do you think the new MBA will be powerful enough for using say Adobe Premiere Pro etc(I'd be using external monitor)? Are they basically just slightly toned down versions of the MBP? Really sick of lugging around a heavy laptop

I'm not famaliar enough with the app to know what's acceptable or not. The SSD does a lot to speed mine up, but I basically do a lot of word processing with mine, nothing real processor intensive.

If you want windows7 on your MBP, do you have to buy it? It seems like it costs $150 but a $350 toshiba has windows7 which makes no sense since the rest of the laptop only cost $200 or i'm being ripped off when i buy win7 separately. are there any free ways to get windows 7 for your laptop? like if your friend who has a pc has the cd, can you just use it?

No. You need to pay for the OS. 2+2 frowns upon discussions of stealing software.

students usually get healthy discounts on microsoft software. My uni provided Windows for $10.
