left 30" goes black, I'm switched to basic (nonAero) theme

My left 30" went black for a second, then came back on, and my theme was switched to what appeared to be Vista Basic or whatever it's called (this is on Windows 7). After about 3 minutes it flashed again and went back to Aero. My machine seemed to make some sort of noise each time it happened.
What could cause this?

watching video with the wrong video renderer, some app thats not compatible etc. its no big deal usually. the reason your screen goes black is just because windows is switching video modes.
what kind of noise are you talking about ? did it happen only once ? (if yes, just dont worry)

I wasn't watching video. I had poker clients + HEM + Pidgin + PlaceMint + AHK + Notepad++. Same programs I always run.
Is it standard for just the left monitor to go black when it switches video modes?
I realize the noise comment isn't very helpful w/o being able to describe it, but I can't really. Not a noise I normally hear, but not very loud. Didn't necessarily sound bad. I heard it when it went black the first time, and then when it flashed off and went back to Aero.
