I am wondering if anyone here has any experience using an external mouse for their laptop instead of the touchpad while travelling or away from a desk (on a sofa or in an airport or even in bed)?

Are there any mouse out there that would work better and be better for your hand than using the touchpad that can function away from a desk? I have had a nice mouse before but when I am travelling and not sitting at a hard surface, I found it pretty useless.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

the new Logitech mice have a "darkfield technology" that isn't laser based, and supposedly tracks better on a wider variety of surfaces when compared to a normal laser mouse. I have the Performance Mouse MX w/ darkfield technology, and although i mostly just use it on my desk, it does track just fine on the surface of a couch or pantleg or w/e.

much appreciated. how does the darkfield technology operate? could you use it as effectively as the touchpad in a cramped space like on a plane?

any totally non-conventional things that exist and are liked?

I'd say it would work pretty well, you'd just have to get one of the smaller mice (definitely not the performance mouse mx cuz its gigantic) and turn up the sensitivity a bit.

you think it would work on top of a crunched up blanket, or does the surface have to be relatively hard/flat?

ya don't think it would be able to manage that. there's just too much variance in the distance of the surface from the eye on the bottom of the mouse. it would have to be a harder surface.
