I may have a virus, trojan, spyware, or other malware, what should I do? I may have a virus, trojan, spyware, or other malware, what should I do?

My computer has been steadily declining for the last few weeks. It will freeze several times through use. It is lagging terrible at times and getting worse by the day.

I ready the malware sticky and attempted to follow step 1.
I downloaded the dds.scr
and I got this in a notepad:

I don't see anything in your HJT log ( I am not the best at this but nothing stands out)

What is the WOT toolbar?

You can download CCLEANER. Clean up your browsers and system temp files and caches, and clean your registry.

Do you have Kaspersky set to do on-access scanning? That could be slowing things. Do you have a paid subscription? You may want to consider going with Avira or Avast free editions.

You can also download and run SuperAntiSpyware.

If you are still having problems it may be hardware related. How much RAM do you have installed? Is XP recognizing all of it? Is your harddrive space ok?

You DDS install may be corrupt and that is what is causing the giberish. If you can install and run other things I think you are "clean".

I'm wondering why DDS was trying to run in DOS mode. XP isn't even DOS based.

It is a firefox add-on for the web of trust website. http://www.mywot.com/ I have been doing my best to practice safe browsing.

Check. I have done everything but clean the registry. I didn't think it was wise for me to mess with a registry when I don't know what the hell I am doing.

I was running Avast previous to Kaspersky. I was having the issue way before the kapersky download. I am not too sure about the settings. I am using the trial version of Kaspersky internet 2010.

You can also download and run SuperAntiSpyware.:
I will give this a try and see what happens. Do you suggest I run this in safemode as well?

If you are still having problems it may be hardware related. How much RAM do you have installed? Is XP recognizing all of it? Is your harddrive space ok?
I have 4gb ram installed but I running 32b XP and I assume that it is not recognizing all of it? I have two internal hard drives.

LirvA. Please think of something. I don't want to have to deal with that damn geek squad. I was considering reformatting and rolling with windows 7. However, If I am having hardware issues I am not sure what to do.

Right click on "My Computer" and select properties, take a screen shot of the results and post here.

CCLEANER reg cleaner is pretty straight forward. I haven't had any problems with it so far.

Lirva is one of the greats around here, Funkyworms is another.

Windows can get crappy after a while and need a reinstall. It sucks and I have been able to avoid it on XP but it does happen.

I think your hardware is healthy but run what Livra recommends.

I think your hardware is fine too. Don't mess with any registry cleaners.

Please post your HijackThis Uninstall Log. If you don't know how please see this video.

Ok guys. I could not locate the windows xp recovery disk. So, decided to suck it up reformat to windows7. I used PC mover and copied only my important files and software programs that I use often like microsoft office. etc. I went to load 3 tables of FTP and guess what.... it froze on me twice while in session and I had to shut down Should I have just done a complete install? Sigh

I always prefer a fresh install. Clean, easy.

Did you get the 64-bit Win7 or the 32-bit one? Was your old XP 32-bit?

I went with win7-64 bit and xp was 32 bit. I noticed that my GPU temp is running at 61c. I have 3 internal fans and they were running at medium. I set to fans to high and no change. I am curious if I should be looking to get a new CPU fan? Also, could this temp be causing freezing? This build is 6 months old and I am going to try and clean it out today and hope for the best.
