So, everyone is aware that HP has unceremoniously tossed WebOS stuff under the buss in the last couple of days (along with possibly all its personal computing business) right? This is apparently GREAT news for the consumer!!

Here are some links for you:
http://slickdeals.net/forums/showthr...2#edit41815736
http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/19/l...n-sale-for-99/

Basically, these bad boys are going to be slashed all the way down to $99 for the 16GB version and $149 for the 32GB version. This should all start tomorrow in stores. However, by following the slickdeals link above, you can grab one from the hp webstore for even cheaper! Last I checked, the slickdeals specials had already run the 16GB supply into the ground, but the 32GB was still hanging around. Either way, you will be able to head to your local Best Buy (or wherever) for nearly as good a deal starting early tomorrow.

NOW, go get you a cheap tablet (and like install an Android ROM on it)!

Also mods, I am not sure this is the most appropriate place for this. I figured here or the marketplace or maybe OOT, but I couldn't really settle (and I spend most of my time here in the tech room anyhow) and I didn't want to sit on a deal like this while I twiddled my thumbs and waited for a mod to better inform me of where it most appropriate to place this thread. I am just trying to think of mah peeps after all.

I really lucked out and managed to score one at Walmart Saturday morning. I was just in the right place at the right time when they happened to put them out on the shelf late in the morning.

I actually only nabbed a single 32GB one because my wife didn't want to get more than one. By Sunday she had rethought that and now we are still waiting on either Newegg to drop their prices (they still haven't), for HP to get more stock in from returns from places like Costco that sent them back, or from a few hold out stores as apparently a few niche B&M stores have some. My wife is going to go through the final rounds tomorrow and try to score one or two more, but I kinda think we are outta luck since she waited. Hopefully we will get lucky.

Of note, I have read that some Best Buy stores actually did ship some stock back and may get it back in their stores in the next day or so. Here is to hoping that happens I suppose!

I made a few casual attempts to land one but have struck out completely. At this point I'm pretty sure it would just be dumb luck to find a place with one in stock.

i think prices were cut there as well, but you can't find them for that price.

They are discontinuing the product and OS so they are having a firesale globally to eliminate stock.

how is this not an atrocious economical decision? They would have been able to liquidate them even if they were sold 200$...

It has to be something about getting rid of them quickly. HP is obviously not dumb, so there must of been a reason for the price that they chose. My guess is that they did this to ensure that they got rid of all inventory within a certain time frame.

I mean how many of them are out there, 100,000 (guess)? So you're talking $10M difference.

But yeah, I still don't get it. It's a free $10M it seems like. Unless they weren't sure they could liquidate quickly enough at $200, but I think they were mistaken if that was the case.

At $250-$300 I think your sales slow down HUGE though. Especially considering a lot of people like me just snagged 3 or 4 of them at $100 thinking "You can't have too many at that price."

Here some info:

HP's cost to produce the 16GB HP Touchpad is about $300 each.

HP is getting out of the hardware business.

So, WebOS, no support, unlikely to see much in the way of future app development... am I the only person thinking these tablets might be a pass even at the fire-sale price? Unless you're in the market for a Kindle or something not sure I see the full picture at this point

this tablet still does what 90% of people spend 90% of their time on their tablet

I agree with the sentiment that this device does most of what people would want out of a tablet and that even a lack of long-term support is not dissuasive enough at a price point of just $99.

However, that said, devs are already working versions of Ubuntu and/or Android onto these devices. Apparently people have even been shipped versions with Android OS 2.+ in the wild, which seems to me to indicate that not only could these devices run other OS (which makes them useful for FAR longer than they might be under WebOS) but that HP engineers would load the OS on these guys to test them out on different operating systems.

Either way, this means that these guys should likely be longer-lived than WebOS.

Ok, I read those links, are they completely sold out? Slow Pony here.

Also, I'm in Canada, and I saw in one of the links, only Best But and Future Shop were carrying them (both sold out according to link)

Until a major hack flaw appears and HP won't release anymore updates for it to make it secure.

They are pretty much gone at this point. HP is theoretically going to get some of its stock back from stores that opted to ship the tablets back (for instance Costco apparently shipped numerous tablets back). Additionally, the word is that many local Best Buy stores are getting them back into stock sporadically (so sporadic that they are gone before the online inventories can reflect them being back in stock).

Yeah, maybe, but for the more technically inclined there appears to be alot of options outside of WebOS that work on these bad boys.

So my best bet would be to just check with local Best Buys?

Essentially this is correct. However, it really helps to know your shipping dates and times. For instance, I know that in my local region (far away from your local region), Best Buy is getting its shipments tomorrow. My wife had this confirmed for her after calling like ten or eleven different stores around here that previously stated that they had none and would be getting no more of them. The sales associate stated that they are being told to tell people they are NOT getting them, which is what I had read before having her call all the local Best Buys. Apparently once you are at the Best Buy you should have the SKU ready and simply ask for a search on that so the associate can't dick you around if you ask for the Touchpad by name, which they will apparently do in force.

The first link you gave had a link to this ebay seller;

http://www.ebay.com/itm/310332864546...99&PID=1225267

It doesn't say sold out anywhere on this page. Should I just go ahead and try placing a order?

lol at a $99 tablet with the hardware the touchpad has being overpriced.

Worst case and a huge security flaw is discovered and you've got a $99 video player or ereader with a gorgeous screen that you can never go on the internet with again...

This thing is a steal at $99, and the internet knows it.

There were a hell of a lot more than 100k, IIRC. I think it was more like 250+
