Do not play poker on Linux. Use it for everything else.

Wine won't work so virtualbox is your only option.

With virtualbox you need a MS Windows license anyway, so why not just have a dual boot.

Linux wasn't designed to run a poker client, HUD and whatnot. You loose out on a huge chunk of your computer's processing speed running two OS's and VB besides your poker software.

I got PS to run with Wine in Lubuntu once, but after the next update it didn't work anymore. I guess you can do it if you are an expert, but highly doubt that you also can get it to work with HUDs and stuff.

Wtf are you talking about? Poker clients having nothing to do with Linux, and has everything to do with developers writing ****ty unportable code. I currently have a dual-boot myself, but thinking virtual machine is a better option for me personally because I literally use Windows for 1-2 programs.

this isn't true for what it's worth. Both the pokertracker 4 HUD and the pokerstars client work in linux with wine. True, there's a few artifacts on the PT client's non hud functionality (graph axis don't render properly for instance) but the hud itself works. The PT client is totally fine, as is the 888 one. I use both. Not actually tried the hud + PS client - use the PT hud + 888 client daily.

btw, the method to get it going was 1) download the windows .exe, 2) run it with wine executable. 3) there is no (3).

Various 2+2 members came here asking how to make their poker play quicker and more reliable, putting their HEM DB on an SSD and optimizing whatever they can.

Now you come here, with your "no windows on my computer" blinders on and voluntarily putting two extra layers between your computer and poker software. Current Poker clients have been designed in a ****ty way, as grim says, so just suck it up that everything else but running them on Windows will be like having sex wearing two condoms

And this comes from someone who has Mint as primary OS. I have literally one program that I use Windows for.

PS works fine with wine if you use 32bit version. Forget running HEM or PT.

I had to agree, tried playing in Virtual Machine, but ended with Windows. A necessary evil.

oh crap, sounds like I'm screwed. My laptop is Dell, Latitude D630. so its an old laptop that probably won't run windows 10 smoothly. On top of that, running PS in a VM might not be the best solution because my laptop might not be able to handle it.

I simply installed linux mint on top of window xp. or is there a way to get my XP back?

Your laptop should do fine with 10, if you really want that piece of spyware. If you're not too tech savvy the best way to get dual boot with windows is to reformat your drive and repartition it the right way before installing any os. Google "dual boot windows /linux" mint to learn about how to partition it correctly and adjust the bootloader.

If you installed mint "on top of xp " it's likely erased.

I don't mean this in a mean way, but if you have to ask, then probably no. If you didn't identify which partitions Windows is running on before partitioning space for Mint, then you probably partitioned some (or all) of your hard drive for Mint. If you bought your pc with Windows already installed on it like most people do, then Windows will take up your entire hard drive, so you have to look for partitions that aren't useful, e.g. a 20g backup partition, and partition that area for Linux use.

If you really did overwrite Windows, you may consider pirating Windows if you really need it (or try running it on a virtual machine and see how that goes).

Dualbooting win and linux on same harddrive can give you loads of troubles when you are not poweruser. Easier is to run two seperate drives.

dualbooting is very simple to achieve, plenty of installation walkthroughs can be found on the www that are fairly easy to follow for the non-power user.

I once managed to set up Ubuntu on a partition for dual boot such that I could also start it with a virtual machine using vmware. OS inception.

As an aside, what's with the hype with Mint/Ubuntu? I started using Debian a year ago, and liked it better than Mint/Ubuntu, and this weekend I transitioned to Arch, and I like it better than Debian. With Arch there's 0 bloatware. You can even use a windows manager (instead of a full blown desktop environment), and get a super light weight computer. Best Christmas present I ever got.

Arch still doable for a non linux geek?

I have an Asus eeepc that is awfully slow with Mint.
I once tried a eeepc specific linux but it was full of bugs

I don't know any specifics regarding your hardware, but generally speaking, yes, anyone with 6 months of Linux experience can install Arch. I don't even consider myself a Linux expert, all I do is read instructions, and Arch has good documentation. I would try installing Arch on a side laptop and testing all of your commonly used programs.

I also recommend i3 (or any other simple windows manager), over a desktop environment. Search it on YouTube. And installing video and sound cards sounds intimidating, but it's not much more difficult than installing 1 extra program/library from the package manager. Worst case scenario is you can fall back on xfce.

Can you clarify. Did you pay attention to what partitions Windows was on when you installed Mint?
