Critical beep noise when clicking tables in lobbies

I've been having a weird problem recently on 2 machines - whenever I click on a table in either the FTP or Party lobby I get a critical beep alert. Both machines are vista and i don't think there's any hardware/software that's running on both setups. If i mute the sound in the control panel, the computer [from the box, not through the speakers] beeps. If anyone else has had this problem, please let me know how to solve it because it's driving me insane.

I have this problem with FTP on Vista also. No clue how to fix it, but it started after I (unsuccessfully) attempted to change the FTP client's priority.
