Converting DVDs to other Video Formats? Converting DVDs to other Video Formats?

I have a DVD ripped on my computer and I want to convert it into either an mp4, avi, mpeg, or whatever will work. Please keep in mind that I have a Mac as well.

I have a video_ts folder with numerous files that have a .VOB, .BUP, .IFO file extensions.

If you can help direct me as to what type of program I need, or what I need to google to find things, or even the PC programs that do this so I can find an appropriate MAC duplicate, it would be much appreciated.

you can try something like this:

I recommend mkv container with x264/h.264 codec for best quality/size.

Get Handbrake and re-rip the DVD to whatever format you want.

Btw, doing this is probably illegal in the U.S. and many other countries even if no copyright is infringed in the process (i.e., no copyright is infringed due to the fair-use doctrine). Handbrake and co. violate the digital millennium copyright act (aka DMCA) by circumventing the anti-piracy measures found on most Video DVDs.

I'm assuming he has home DVDs he needs backing up. Also, even if twoplustwo is against copyright, that has to be one of the worst forms of copyright law ever. It's not really different (IMO) than backing up your CD into mp3 for personal use, which AFAIK is legal.

We're fine as long as we're talking about personal backups.

sure. not that i disapprove of this thread at all.

however, my understanding it backing up a video dvd IS different from backing up an audio cd due to the fact that most video dvds are copy-protected by css as a minimum (and sometimes using more involved techniques). basically, while being slightly OT, my intention was to make people aware that DMCA sucks. the recent ruling against realnetworks (the manufacturer of realplayer) demonstrates that u.s. courts are strict in interpreting the DMCA.

While I agree that it is silly, 2After909 is correct that under the DMCA it is illegal to rip you DVDs, even for personal backup, if they have CSS protection.

So yes the DMCA sucks but Handbrake doesn't break CSS (i.e. it can't be used to rip most commercial DVDs).

Yeah, it's footage we took as part of a club I attended at a University. I have one of the original DVDs but not the other. Every program I've tried has left either a watermark or limited the audio. Thanks for the suggestions... handbrake is next!
