Hello, I am going to buy a new computer for playing poker and I have no idea what I am doing.

One store suggested they could build this setup:

-CPU/Core i5-4670K 3.4GHz 6M BOXED

-ASUS Z8Z-K LGA1150 Intel Z87 4xDDR3 ATX

-Asus1GB D5 X GTX650-DC2GR

-2X: KINGSTON HYPERX GENESIS 8GB 1600MHZ DDR3 (2X4GB) CL9

-COOLER MASTER SILENCIO 450 ATX USB3.0

-XFX550W PRO Core Edition ATX 80+Bronze

-HDSSD 2,5 256GB Samsung 840 Pro

The whole setup costs 1169 euros. Are some of these components super clear overkills for poker or should I change some components for better ones?

No need for 16GB of ram. Get 8. If you ever need more, you can always add.
You don't need a GTX650 for poker…unless you want some gaming…
That SSD is overkill. Get a 120GB one, and 1TB HDD - still cheaper than that SDD
You probably can get a smaller PSU as well… About the board, I can't really say anything, all it needs is SATA 6GB/s. Get an I7 instead, check out the 3600K - 3.4GHZ quad core that can be easily clocked to 4.0GHz if needed, or 4.4GHz if you really want to.

The only reason I told him to get an i7 it's because the price difference is not that big, and an i7 will be up to date for a longer period of time. By your point of view he might as well get an i3 then. But price wise, get an i7. 3600K should be cheap right now.

Spending almost 400EUR on a CPU/board bundle for poker only, respectively >1k for the whole machine (excluding a monitor), just blows my mind. Poker will still be a 2D app with minimal processing power requirements even anno 2020.

The 4670K has 84W TDP, whereas a 3820 burns up to 130W (not sure what you meant with 3600K as those don't seem to exist, and 36xx are mobile CPUs anyway). If anything you'd have to clock it down to be worthwhile.

And yes, a decent i3 will probably be more than fine for at least 5 years to come, speaking of online poker and light office apps, as will any decent AMD quad-core (which also comes with a better iGPU). Imho, you've got to be insane if you spend more than 250EUR for a CPU/board bundle for aforementioned tasks.

obv. baobhan you are right.

But, online poker usage will probably ending him up increasing his computer usage for more task has time goes by .

It's not like it was impossible to just add a decent video card to an i5 and grind most modern games in full detail @1920*1200. Even I can do that with my 700EUR PhenomII/HD7850 machine. Pretty unlikely that he'll turn into a pro gamer in an instant.

I'm just pointing out that you can grind dozens of tables on literally any quad core (and OLP will probably be cold dead before that changes), since he mentioned he has no clue at all.

You're right about the cpu, I meant i7 2600K, my bad!
Power usage is not that important tbh, he won't notice any noticeable difference on the bill, and it's not running on a battery, so it's fine.

Still, ya, if he wants only poker, sure, why not an i3. But I was giving him the hardware for a long term computer that can be used for basically anything that he'd ever do for the next 5-7 years.

I don't know tbh the difference in price between an i3 and an i7 right now, and can't look up right now neither.

But, truth be told, he can build a computer for 600$ for the needs he has. But he won't be able to do much more than poker and web related stuff on it.

New egg has some gr8 discounted DIY bundles

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboB...=Combo.1413571 $500 with decent graphic card for gaming on medium to high settings, without ssd & amd instead of intel but i mean just showing that you dont need to spend $1400-1500 or even close to it for poker nor even a poker pc mainly but slight gaming on the side.

Basically $600 can get you a good modern processor, ssd, mobo, graphics card, 8gig ram & not much else you need, you probably can skip the graphics card & get the new generation intel chips with hd 4600-5100 & probably is enough for 1080 resolution for poker.

edit* http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboB...=Combo.1398698 i5 3570 3.4ghz, 120gig ssd, 8gig ram = $470 as a bundle.
