I also tried the trackpad and the lag was the same whether using the trackpad or the mouse.
Are you sure you run your SEIKI @ 60hz and not 30hz? And wireless mouse adds latency now combine 30hz + wireless mouse and you get so called "lag" when moving arrow around desktop. Not a smooth experience.

I'm not sure what I ran on the Seiki. The Sieki was in 2014. I don't think 30hz was possible with that setup.

With the 4k TV I was at 60hz.

I was using a wired mouse.

This is high end for the MacBook but I have no idea how it compares to other GPUs.

When I talked to the Philips tech support guy he said they had a Mac Mini hooked up to their 40" 4k monitor using display port with no mouse lag.

The Mac Mini has a less powerful GPU.
Hooking up a device to another device without lag is one thing. You multitabling is another thing.

Your lag is not because of one single element you can replace, it's a combination of things.

1. a GPU with great 3D power but no 2D power whatsoever to keep it simple.
2. badly coded software when it comes to performance hogs
3. weird display whose price is too low to come without strings attached
4 ... something I did miss probably

To help you solve your issue:

Which OS are you running? Are you even sure that the macbook is switching to the discrete GPU or are you using the onboard GPU all the time while on desktop?

1. i'm using ElCapitan on the MacBook.

2. I don't know if the MacBook switched to the discrete GPU or how to determine that. I've returned the TV so I can't retest. I'm pretty sure I had mouse lag even when my poker software wasn't running.

wellju, you doesn't really seem to have a clue what you're talking about. A lot of people have trouble getting this specific monitor to run at 60Hz, so that seems like the most likely issue. Not some weird 3D-juiced GPU, wtf. Also the picture quality and viewing angles on this monitor are just fine. Please stop ranting about things you don't know about.

duathlon, have you tried this? "Using the joystick on the back of the monitor, select Setup | Display Port | 1.2 (rather than default 1.1)." That seems to fix most people's problems. I haven't used a mac in a number of years, but there should be somewhere in the display settings to check if you have the monitor running at 60Hz or not.

The TV I was experimenting with didn't have an option to select 1.2. I've seen that mentioned as a common fix. I was able to run that TV at 60hz, 30hz, and 24hz with no difference.

The Phillips guy said their 40" monitor should also be set to 1.2, but he also said it wouldn't work without mouse lag, but I'm still not convinced of that because he said it worked fine with the Mac Mini, the only difference was that computer had display port and the MacBook Pro didn't have display port, and he said it wouldn't work correctly through the thunderbolt port.

I'm tempted to buy the $800 Phillips monitor and try it, but everyone is charging a 15% restocking fee if it doesn't work.

How does this mouse lag look exactly? E.g. when you pick a window with your mouse cursor and move it around, that window gets displayed with a lag as well, right? Are movies working, e.g. are they in sync with the audio?

Butthurt much because a bad display delivers bad results?

I ran a couple videos and there was no lag and the audio/video were in sync. The only issue I noticed was with the mouse.

I moved my mouse and the cursor didn't go where I wanted it. It would get close then I'd have to move it again.

The phillips 40" monitor on Amazon works. If you get it just make sure you switch it to 1.2 and check the reviews on Amazon for additional technical help to get it working correctly. It took me 1-2 hours to figure it out.

Glad you got this figured out.

I also tried the same 30hz Seiki you did last year. And also found mouse movement unusable for multi tabling. Even after replacing vid card/mouse ect. I'm not sure how some people were using it @30hz. But i guess everyone's eyes/ applications are different.
