Are 30" monitors overrated? Are 30" monitors overrated?

I currently have three 20" 2001fp side by side, which I mostly used for 12 tabling SNG - a pretty cool setup, back in the day.

I've since moved to cash and have been bitten by the upgrade bug. But is upgrading to a 30" really beneficial? I'm not a huge fan of resized tables or big overlap, but figure that as I add more cash tables, maybe I should get used to more overlap. So I was considering keeping one of the 20" in landscape for HEM, 2+2, etc and the new 30" for the tables.

Would be interested to hear responses from anyone with a similar setup to mine who has made the switch to a 30".

Thanks in advance

one 30"(2560x1600) is pretty close to two 20"(1600x1200) in portrait mode. just a little larger. i think two 30" would be pretty kick ass but one doesn't add a whole lot to your setup. just wait they will go down in $ in the near future and you will be glad you waited.

Thanks for your response rubbrband and I think you're right, I probably should wait until they drop in price. I've never liked monitors in portrait mode and was wondering if other people thought the 30" with 6 tables + a bunch of unusable space was really a big advantage over the 20", which fits 4 perfectly. They are pretty sexy though...

Can't you get a lot more than 6 tables on a 30"?

A 20" in portrait mode is pretty slick for reading web pages or other documents. Especially if the monitor is a wide screen. If you have a stand that can handle it, like the Samsung, give it a try.

You should be able to 9 table without overlap and a little extra room on the screen.

I'm not a fan of 30" monitors... For the money I'd rather have 2 24"s - the resoultion is 3840x1200 vs 2560x1600.

If you are playing a lot of cash tables you might want to experiment with the "stacking" technique instead of tiling. I switched to that recently and I won't go back. With stacking it doesn't matter what your monitor is... even a 1024x768 would be fine.

30" monitors are the nuts imo. Stick a 20" monitor vertically on either side for added awesomeness.

I've been waiting for the 30s to drop down the price and it's still 1200ish...do you know when the 30s will have the price drop? cuz I plan to get it sometime in Sept. or Oct.

I'm headed out to Vegas tomorrow and don't feel like hauling my 20" along with me and buying another 20" while I'm out there doesn't seem to make sense. So I'm looking to buy a 30" and then just ship it back at the end of the WSOP.

What's the best 30" to buy right now. I was looking at the Samsung 305T and the Dell 3007WFP-HC. Those two seem to be the cheapest and I'd like to be able to buy a second one that will match at some point in the future. Is there another one I should be considering that is comparable price/value?

Also looked at the Apple but it seems a bit pricier and I'm guessing isn't worth the extra cash.

I'll be running it off my Dell E1705 with the dual link dvi-d.

AFAIK the DVI-D port on the E1705 is single link. I recommend doing some research because I'm am 99% sure you won't be able to run a 30" @ 2560x1600 with an E1705. Speak with a Dell rep about whether or not your laptop will support it. If they say it will support 2560x1600, get it in writing or ask for some sort of guarantee to hold them accountable for their statements.

I'm about 90% sure your e1705 won't output at full res, but good news is they just came out with this.

20 tabling like this is **** imo and that is from experience, better off cascading or utilizing the 2 verticle 20" so that all the tables are bigger. 6-12 tabling on the 30" is great, 16 tables is doable but not wonderful unless you have a landscape 20". I wish I got 2 24"s but whatever...

I got 1-22 about 18 months ago, and am gettin a mate for it next week. I wish I could have afforded a 24 back then, so I would have dual 24's now.

I agree, that looks painful to 20 table tile on one monitor.

I wonder if there are many people in your camp who would prefer two 24" monitors to one 30"? I never really saw the advantage of the 24" over the 20" (seemed like an unusable 320 pixels on the side), but they do seem to sell for a big premium over the 20's and must have some fans out there.

Thank you for your response. Definitely food for thought.

I have a nVidia GeForce Go 7900 GS in it and it has a dual link DVI-D port but it looks like the max resolution that it can put out is 2048x1536.

I take it trying to run a 30" at that resolution would look l like sht.
