Pinker* has silly hair, therefore I am right and he is wrong.

Debunked is a better word but I'm following Cato's lead on Carthage. Just for historical fun.

*I have one of his silly books

I took a quick look at the book below at my sister's house. Ripping good stuff. All limey talk and they talk whiff-whaff good. You need to buy this for Christmas which is just around the capitalist corner.

I use his toilet, obviously. Hoping they say something so I can ask them why everyone else doesn't have toilet paper.

What about Burma? What's the supply line like for toilet paper in good old Burma?

I spewed about Venezuelan months ago on being on the verge of collapse and now it appears that it is getting bloody. The chaos continues, from the BBC:

I've never lost an air-dried sock, though the kittens sometimes do grab them off the rack like they are prey.

The 2001 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded for work with chiral molecules

Deplorable science once again proves itself. When will this annoying run of luck cease?

Not sure if I've mentioned this or not.

I was called for jury duty last week. The defendants, correctly I think, accepted a plea bargain on the second day of jury selection. I was presented nothing that would make me think they were guilty of the charges.

The experience did not strengthen my faith in humanity. Quite frankly, I spent quite a bit of time trying to reconcile the words coming out of their mouths as they were interviewed for their civil duty with the fact that most of them had been capable of tying their own shoes.

I did step on a few shoelaces in an attempt to untie them and got 3. All three were, inexplicably, capable of retying their shoes. This eliminated my hypothesis that they all had shoe-tying caretakers.

I have always been surprised by the plea bargains in the US. Looks there's not enough interest in even trying to find out how things were.

Plea guilty to the charges, and you will get only life in prison, not the death penalty!

It's a lot like lawyers and insurance companies. They've seen it all and they know what everything is 'worth.' Same w/ prosecutors and defense lawyers although I think that one of the things of worth to criminal defendants - the cost of a trial - is unfortunate. I think if you had all of the factors to consider you'd probably think them reasonable. Or you can think them reasonable simply by the fact that it's a regular feature of the criminal justice system.

Very long sentences were very likely for the defendants if they were found guilty. "Beyond a reasonable doubt" is not "trying to find out how things were."

This was the case:

The best point of the jury selection was, after several of those who were trying to avoid their civic duty complained that they couldn't be objective, as stated (and paraphrased by me) by the judge "we're not interested in whether you are for or against sexual abuse of a minor. Do you I get a show of hands of those who are in favor of sexual abuse of a minor? Those in favor of theft? Robbery?

"We don't care whether you don't like sexual abuse of a minor or whether the subject upsets you."

Jury selection or plea bargaining

Which would be least likely to be part of a decent justice system?

So i have had shooting stars in my early night sky the last three nights looking east to south from Alabama. Just saw a bluish green one.

I checked-in at Standing Rock today. Even if nobody is using social media to disrupt protestors they could and we have something in numbers and non-local acts of presence. Groovy I believe is the old school word for the water.

Yeah. When I went to KL for the first time it looked quite civilized apart from the slums, and then I went up into the highlands. Holy crap. The lakes and streams filled - filled! - with garbage and sewage, no septic or treatment - and when you go the bathroom, you just wash your ass straight into the water supply, then put your pants on wet. I stopped eating fresh food in Asia after that.

50c/pound mangosteens though...frigging heaven. I bought 30 pounds at the first supermarket we stopped at.

Hope you're having a blast - it's one of my favorite countries.

You know how speakers produce sound waves but you can also use sound waves to do work (as in moving a microphone membrane). You can use that work to turn an engine that generates electricity and charges a battery.

So something like that but with non-sound waves and a bit more clever.
