Consider the sentence:

Quote:
Why, I can't imagine who would ever want to know that.
Is there a technical term for that use of "why"? I've googled 'declarative why' on a hunch but no dice. Anyone know?

Don't think so because if A then B is a statement not an argument. It's not like A is the premise and B is the conclusion.

Edit: However, A is a premise and B the conclusion of the valid argument A, if A then B |- B, and if A and B are both false then this argument is unsound.

I'd go with Discourse marker but would not argue with anyone who wanted to just call it an Interjection.

And now that I bother to look it up, Merriam-Webster says it's an interjection. Cheers.

Why is August hotter than June when June gets more sunlight?
SMP Life is Being Drunk -Random Content thread Quote

It takes time for the climate system to heat up. Snow melts, the land dries out, the rocks heat up to a depth of a few meters, the ocean and lake surfaces take weeks to warm (and coversely, to cool down).

Basically the same reason that both the air temperatures and roads/rock walls are hottest in the early to late afternoon, well after the sun has peaked. Just on a seasonal scale.

Hypothetical situation

A giant comet is observed moving rapidly through the oort cloud along the outer edges of the solar system. It is catalouged with a number along with any other asteriod or comet. It continues to get closer and 5 years later it is on a collision course with neptune. Even more shocking is the irregular movement of the object and that it appears to be a giant fish. It is assumed that it is of course not biological in nature but a wave of curiousity causes its collision to be the number one topic in astronomy circles. The object appears to be larger than neptune!
Instead of colliding with neptune, neptune is "consumed" by this object.
a wave of panic sets in. amatuer astronomers can now easily see the fish like features of this supossed comet. Hubble even detects something that appears to be gills which is ridculous because this giant "Fish" is traveling through space and came outside the heliosheath. still thats what it appears to be, a giant fish monster. The fish then eats saturn and it's moons like they are leftover crumbs from a satisfying meal. Now the news begins to focus on this and widespread panic spreads throuhgout the world. It cannot be scientifically explained(as of yet) what the **** this thing is or how and why it would consume these planets and how it could possibly be converting planets into energy in it's theoretical digestive system. It then eats jupiter. what appears to be eyes are visible. It continues to come closer to the sun. there are visible scars all over it's apparent body that resemble meteor impacts and sunburn. It is now visible clearly as a giant fish with the naked eye and eats anything in comes into contact with. It is heading deeper into the inner solar system.

Great quote by a great mathematician

Quote:
Mathematics is a way of thinking in everyday life,” Dr. Gelfand said in a 2003 interview with The New York Times. “It is important not to separate mathematics from life. You can explain fractions even to heavy drinkers. If you ask them, ‘Which is larger, 2/3 or 3/5?’ it is likely they will not know. But if you ask, ‘Which is better, two bottles of vodka for three people, or three bottles of vodka for five people?’ they will answer you immediately. They will say two for three, of course.

'Everything is light'

This is my philosophical explanation of everything. It is apparent. What is apparent is only apparent through the existence of information transproting somehwere through the medium of light, wether it is an infra red sensor, a taste, a thought, a sight, everything is observation on some level, of energy. Observation includes something being relative to something else. Such as a place containing energy being relative to a void where there is no energy- however then this disutes time because what if there was energy in this place 10 seconds ago? What is 10 seconds ago relative to?

anyway this fFeynman dude was asked a question on this, and this was his answer, basically mocked the question. But I wonder what you guys think?

Also mod would it have been ok to make this a thread?
