I don't really understand, having never done any of it. You don't seem like the "insane go getter" type, which is how I view surgeons, but I guess if surgery is like playing video games or something that's awesome. Anyway, congratulations on having no trouble getting laid, like, ever again.

Yeah I only really fit the surgeon mold on a superficial level, in that I am arrogant and kind of a dick. I'm not nearly as meticulous and obsessive and anal as many surgeons are. We'll see how it works out, but I think I'll be fine....I've got role models in surgery that I think are very similar to me, that are successful, so I think it should be ok.

Basically, every field of medicine breaks down about like this, imo: 10% thinking/being smart/knowing things (the fun part), and then 90% something else. In surgery, that something else is cutting people open. In medicine, that something else is rounding, and sucking up to patients, and talk therapy, and coddling. I'm much more interested in the 10% than the 90% even in surgery, but its the field that has by FAR the most tolerable 90%.

Some fields, like anesthesia and neurology, are probably more like 20/80, but the 80 in those is far worse than the 90 in surgery, so on balance surgery is preferable.

And who knows, maybe I will actually become more dedicated and focused and detail-oriented now that I've found something that I actually really want, for pretty much the first time in my life. This was honestly the first time I can remember, not involving girls, that I actually stayed up all night stressed out that I might not get it. Even for med school I didnt really care all that much since I didnt really want to go to medical school anyway, so if I didnt get in, oh well, I'd just do something else. This was the first time I ever looked "60 years of misery and loathing" straight in the face.

Good thing I matched!!

Seems acronyms become words fast in this written medium: lol, imo, etc. Does that happen verbally (like, when people talk to each other and stuff)?

was a 7 seed in the "future surgeon" bracket, will be training in Springfield, IL. Overall pretty happy, just a little bruised ego from my #4 choice who whispered sweet nothings into my ear all year and then passed on me.

Ah, it's just the crapshoot element. Getting matched in a surgery program at all is something a lot of people would give major limbs for, doing well is pretty hot. And Springfield seems nice, I'm not sure what you were hoping for in terms of that. You can go pretty much anywhere from here.

Yeah, from an actual program standpoint, SIU>my #4 choice, it was just the geographic thing that made me prefer the #4. And yeah, its a bit of a crapshoot, but it goes in order. If they ranked me as highly as they claimed they did, it should have been impossible for me to slip past them. I know that, at the bare minimum, they ranked 3 others ahead of me, but that is unlikely that they would have matched their top 3, so probably they ranked even more than that.

I think I will really enjoy SIU and you are right, I can pretty much do anything from there. And I am more than happy to move out of a big city and back to the midwest.

NCAA basketball analogy, I conveniently ranked 16 programs in the Match, which is the same as the number of seedings in the tournament. 1 seed would be my top choice, I matched at my 7th choice. Its good, not fantastic, but obv they are all pretty decent places to train at. Important part was being invited to the Big Dance.

James Randi has come out of the closet.

I am somewhat surprised a man like that would stay closeted for so long.

I have immense respect for Randi - reading that I shed a tear for what it must have meant for him.

Also I don't know what to do... I'm 21, just graduated with a BS in Maths/Physics and am applying for a MS physics at the ETHZ, but I don't think it's right for me. I'm thinking about quantitative finance because it offers access to a lucrative career. Have also applied to air traffic control school.

So what to do folks?

On an unrelated note: Bitches be crazy.

how much difference is there between people who actually do well and graduate from very good schools versus just solid schools? i don't mean the top top schools in the very good category but say tier 2 (usc, ucla, etc) versus a kind of regular state university. among people in the same major obviously. oh and from a prospective employer pov.

phew that's better, helped me recover a bit from that cat powder thingy.

Then this: Stevie Ray Vaughan - Little Wing

Thought about some Hendrix covers but that seems like cheating somehow.

Haha sorry chezlaw. But you could learn from Zeno, who has the good taste to leave his disapproval in the subtext.

I'll always love Chan Marshall though. You can't stop me.
