Similarities in Camus's Stranger and Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody? Similarities in Camus's Stranger and Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody?

I just read Camus's Stranger and while digesting the story, unconsciously bohemian rhapsody's part "nothing really matters to me" started playing in my head.
Now that i look at the lyrics, it seems they have a lot in common.
Quote:
"Is this the real life-
Is this just fantasy-
Caught in a landslide-
No escape from reality-"
Meursault really didn't care much about reality or real life besides any physical experiences, and when he couldn't get them while imprisoned, he really started thinking about meaning of life.

Quote:
Anyway the wind blows, doesnt really matter to me,
To me

Mama,just killed a man,
Put a gun against his head,
Pulled my trigger,now hes dead,
Mersault shot a man, he could be confessing to his dead mother

Quote:
Too late,my time has come,
Sends shivers down my spine-
Bodys aching all the time,
When Mersault finally realized he is indeed going to die, he literally shivered as far as i can recall
Quote:

Easy come easy go-,will you let me go-
Bismillah! no-,we will not let you go-let him go-
Bismillah! we will not let you go-let him go
Bismillah! we will not let you go-let me go
Will not let you go-let me go
Will not let you go let me go
No,no,no,no,no,no,no-
Mama mia, mama mia, mama mia let me go-
Beelzebub has a devil put aside for me,for me,for me-
Mersault was offered pardon or at least redemption if started believing in god, but he refused which led to him getting executed
Quote:

So you think you can stone me and spit in my eye-
So you think you can love me and leave me to die-
Oh baby-cant do this to me baby-
Just gotta get out-just gotta get right outta here-

Nothing really matters,
Anyone can see,
Nothing really matters-,nothing really matters to me,
I think this is the most interesting part, as Mersault did get pretty angry to the priest and after letting all his hatred out, he felt calm and ready to leave this world, as nothing really matters...

Could be far fetched, but i think Freddie at least must've read the book.

We've had a few discussions on nihilism in this forum, check the archives.

I don't know the song and haven't read Camus (though I know who he was as an existentialist), but the concept he's singing about is standard in the West at least since Nietzsche.

A good commentary on this is a chapter from Craig's book which you can read here:

Both also perfectly match up with the movie "the wizard of oz".

I checked wikipedia's references in popular culture for Stranger and that was one of the few songs it mentioned. Have to check it out.

Not much of a rock fan. Some Dylan, some Talking Heads, the odd number I can't avoid hearing from time to time.

NR is the General Grant of poker. Grant said he only knew two songs, "One is Yankee Doodle, the other isn't."

Interesting OP, your lit professor would be proud.

I remember when the Cure got all incensed when racists started appropriating their song "Killing an Arab." The Cure started asking radio stations not to play it. Class act. Good song.

There's more music, Horatio, in heaven and earth, than is dreamt of in your repertoire.
