One important thing to remember is that money is a created tool with values we assign to it. It's much easier to carry a receipt for the value of a resource like gold, than it is to carry the actual resource as wealth.

and also much easier to work for one person, receive money, and trade it to a person who makes bread, and a person who makes houses, than it is to work a day for a baker and a day for a construction worker, or even, easier than making bread for yourself and building yourself a house

edit: it definitely promotes specialization
