When you go around handing out guns to anyone who can get 51% of voters on a particular issue together you're going to get dumb **** happening. This is democracy in action.

Apparently this law was just approved. Some really LOL comments in this article, like

Quote:
“Evolution is not a science. It’s as much a science as Christianity is. The majority of America is Christian, and we should acknowledge that in school,” said Sam Huff, LSU geography freshman.

The integrity and importance of science education in America and around the world should be obvious to all, and maintaining that integrity and importance is a constant battle and I would think a concern for many of the posters on this forum. So in that vein here is information on some organizations that take a lead in promoting quality Science Education.

National Center for Science Education is an organization that promotes and defends Science in the classroom. The link below is to their website with ideas that all can use to promote Science Education in America.

In addition, The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) is a very useful organization that deserves support.

AAAS seeks to "advance science, engineering, and innovation throughout the world for the benefit of all people." To fulfill this mission, the AAAS Board has set these broad goals:

·Enhance communication among scientists, engineers, and the public;
·Promote and defend the integrity of science and its use;
·Strengthen support for the science and technology enterprise;
·Provide a voice for science on societal issues;
·Promote the responsible use of science in public policy;
·Strengthen and diversify the science and technology workforce;
·Foster education in science and technology for everyone;
·Increase public engagement with science and technology; and
·Advance international cooperation in science.

“ Intelligent design isn't science even though it pretends to be. If you want to teach it in schools, intelligent design should be taught when religion or cultural history is taught, not science. ”

Maybe it's not the government's job to be teaching our kids anything. Maybe as free individual Americans we should be able to pick the school based on it's idealology that we want our kids to attend. This is the problem we get when we let government take control of aspects of our lives. Parents should be able to decide to what their child is exposed, not the government.

Sorry for the political rant, but this is the true solution to the problem.

maybe we should run the school system like they do in Belgium. the kids get gov't paid vouchers that they then use to pick what school they want to go to. that way, if they WANT to go to a school where they learn about creationism in biology class, they can. and if they want to go to a real school and get a good education, they can.

of course, the teachers union would never allow that to happen, because then maybe they'd actually have to do some work to keep their jobs

I was about to make some long comments about the history of the public school system and the fact that you need to seriously consider the short-term and long-term effects of various alternatives before you decide to scrap the current system.

Then I found out you can major in geography and it TOTALLY BLEW MY MIND!

Heh. Think Google Maps APIs (aka GIS), not cartography and it might not be quite as surprising.
