building a sports betting model - how much data is needed? building a sports betting model - how much data is needed?

I had doubts if I should make this thread here or in the sports betting subforum, but I thought that maybe it's more fitting to open it here. I hope there are people on this forum who have tried to build betting models succesfully or unsuccessfully, doesn't matter.

There are a couple of publicly available datasets like tennis-data-co-uk and the same for football. These datasets have years worth of samples, but the information in there is pretty basic: for tennis it's match result in games and sets, players' ranks and accumulated points, surface and betting odds. Do you think it's possible to create a decently profitable model with such basic info?

I have talked to a guy who works at a university as some kind of assistant for math area and I was surprised when he told me he's basing his football model on the before mentioned dataset with only a handful more stats like team value from transfermarkt.de.
