SL, really Mauer + 6 Weeks of coaching with Josh McD vs Jamarcus is no contest JMR just b/c QB is very hard to pick up and the Ds are so fast in the NFL. JMR sucks but you are making a huge leap.

Also, you know Mauer was the Gatorade player of the year his senior year in HS at QB, right? And that he had a full ride to Florida St to play QB?

We've seen many players come straight out of college and perform way better then JMR so it isn't like you can say his 3 years or whatever in the Raider organization have been a huge help to him.

What's not to say we put JMR with McDaniels coaching and system and he wouldn't be nearly as bad as he has been in Oakland in a terrible system. Then again his accuracy is off the charts bad. JMR wasn't that bad last year, he's just been a ton worse this year. It's one thing to be a great HS player, it's another to jump right into the NFL. College is of course a better assessment of player level than HS and JMR looked decent there at times. I'll assume Mauer's work ethic and intelligence >>>>>>>>>> JMR, but even then the learning curve for NFL QB is huge for a guy with HS level football skills.

those 2-3 years in college are a big deal from a developmental standpoint. even the best qbs in the nfl right now would have been epically bad had they come right out of high school. talent rarely results in immediate success for nfl qbs and most rookies are just flat out bad

There are definitely players who develop at the college level. Coaches, competition, etc. are significantly better than they were at at a HS level. College is definitely used as a feeder but there is also development. Tebow is not a great example since he was great 2 years ago and hasn't really changed while other guys have progressed throughout college like Stafford. I'm not as familar with progression in football but I've seen progression in college basketball where kids go from no namers out of HS to ballers and work on certain skills.

Ty Lawson is a great example of getting better (he was a great HS prospect), from his sophomore to junior year, his outside shot went from good to excellent and other parts of his game also improved significantly (ball handling, decision making). While you have Tyler Hansbrough who skill level was pretty similar in all 4 years of college other than adding an outside shot. Some people develop, others work on a couple of items which lead to big improvements overall and others stagnate. Tebow was sick 2 seasons ago, it's almost impossible for him at the college level to get much better than he was 2 seasons ago, thus he pretty much stagnated with respect to college football. If you aren't elite, you can get much better year to year in college.
