Martin Reway: Greatest player of all time

Which NHL team had the good sense to draft him?

This is an annual thing. Canada loses in the first couple days, Canadians say "lol it doesn't even matter!" Then they lose in the semis and everyone gets FURIOUS but still claim they TOTALLY NEVER CARED!

Each year, the best part of this thread is the people arguing about who cares and who doesn't.

Tremendous read. all around

It's such an ultimate inferiority complex thing. I try (unsuccessfully due to weirdo friends/relatives) to stay as far away as possible.
The only thing worse than the WJC zealots who come out of the woodwork every December are the cross-armed wet blankets who incessantly cry about everyone else taking it too seriously.

You hate this tournament and yet you're watching. Why?

No doubt, but we're hockey mad and that's okay. It's our March Madness.

I'm just happy the parity is returning somewhat. It's a fun tournament. I certainly don't take it anywhere near as serious as I used to, but I still really like it.

Josh Anderson's the first Burlington product we've sent to the tournament in...****, feels like years. Went to my high school (albeit I'm about 8 years older than him). Played in the same rep system my brother and I are alumni of and that makes me proud. Those stories are pretty cool. I was really excited to see him score against the Germans.

And Canada always has the best team, then they try to pretend like they don't (see Geddy above, e.g.). (Though this year they may not but only because of goaltending and maybe lol Sutter).
Even with LOL Sutter (and it's huuuuuge), Swedes are definitely deeper this year, I don't think there's any question. If we had MacKinnon and Monahan playing, I think the needle would move our way again, but it's very close. This is a very strong Swedish team.

Truth be told, I think this is probably the weakest Canadian roster in quite some time. Past Drouin and McDavid, there simply isn't a lot of elite talent up front, and the goaltending is looking atrocious already. Blueline's legit though...kinda has to be to even think about leaving Nurse off the roster, which I still don't get.

Not everyone else. I think every country except Canada has it pretty much figured out how much to care about a bunch of high schoolers thrown together on an exhibition team for a few weeks.

I don't hate the tournament. I'm very indifferent to it. I don't even hate the huge inferiority complex it creates among every Canadian that you meet for two weeks. I'm just a mixture of amused and scared by it.

Oh for Christ's sake, it's fun. Like I said about Anderson, it's neat to see kids from local communities get a chance to represent our country and play on a big stage.

You're completely kidding yourself if you think that's the reason why the WJC is popular in Canada.

well people like hockey, and there's nothing else on at this time of year when families and friends come together. you might have noticed that the NHL just shut down for 3 days. or maybe you didn't, i don't know. and yes it helps that in some years Canada wafflecrushes the field, people like rooting for a winner.

any other oh so edgy, contrarian #hottakes for us, brah? what a dangerous badass you are!

It's huge because it's had the bejesus promoted out of it by TSN. It's a commercial giant, in the same way that CBS has elevated March Madness to unprecedented heights.

At the same time, you can't pump something up to be this large if it doesn't have considerable emotional/sentimental resonance, and this tournament does that better than almost anything else up here.

Take it easy, Freud. Maybe Canadians just like watching hockey on TV? And it makes it that much more fun when you can root for the good guys with the maple leaf on their jersey (the good kind, not the LOL one from Toronto).

Is it because of an inferiority complex that our 'mercan pals go nuts screaming U-S-A U-S-A U-S-A while watching 15 year old Shawn Johnson doing some kind of dance routine in China? Maybe they just like watching sports on TV and rooting for the stars and stripes.

Annual tournament, featuring young athletes who are not yet playing in the highest professional ranks, and the cast of stars always changes but the interest remains the same.

We're a tenth of the USA's size. With proportional adjustment, I think the comparison is very apt.

Umm, wat. No.

Olympic gymnastics are one of the most competitive international sports there is. You probably couldn't even begin to fathom the amount of money a country like China invests in it's gymnastics programs. That's worth celebrating because it's the best people in the world at their sport and because it's like, an actual accomplishment, to do what Shawn Johnson does: beating really competitive fields in a competition that tons of people care a lot about.

The analogies brought up in this thread are baffling. Even the Canadians who think they are self-aware are embarrassing themselves.

Except March Madness has the best players and a tournament full of rabid fanbases that care about what happens.

Who even plays hockey in Switzerland?
