nothing matches the tension in soccer because 1 goal changes the game so much more than any other sport. If it's 0-0 and you go down 1-0 you are now a massive dog. And vice versa.

So every time you see an attack on your goal, it's a nightmare scenario. Every time you attack it's a potential game winning shot.

No other sport has that same level of constant tension.

I don't understand why Americans get so irritated by this. It's somewhat lame but it's not like they do it all the time.

btw italian fx, if you hate c ronaldo you are in the solid majority of right-thinking soccer fans imo.

it's very natural and you should embrace it. part of the game is developing players you hate.

exactly, and there are mostly a handful of players who are notorious for it (and/or cultures... you see it a lot more in South America for instance.)

But the most soccer fans hate this kind of behaviour, as well as a lot of players themselves.

Hate the players who do that, not the sport itself I would think...

That's the critical part...the CONSTANT tension. The only thing that compares is playoff hockey (for those familiar with that sport), particularly overtime and stuff.

I think other sports have great drama and tension too, but it's more in the anticipation before the fact that it builds.

In football, 3rd and 10 from the opponents 40, down by 3 with 22 seconds left, have to at least get in field goal range to have a chance at the game. If you get a first down you can still win in regulation, etc. The build up to the play and anticipation before it starts is awesome, it's so tense and nerve wracking.

Baseball with the bases loaded and two outs, down by a run in the bottom of the tenth. Left handed pitch hitter against left handed reliever, hitter works a full count and is fouling close pitches off.... awesome tension between each pitch. It's so intense and nerve wracking and awesome.

Now I happen to like soccer more than any other sport, but I think it's unfair to say it has way way more tension than other sports...I think it's the CONSTANT tension that makes soccer so great. You never get a second to breathe, that's what I love about it.

Confederations ranking so far:

Conmebol 73% ( 3-2-0)
Asia 50% ( 2-0-2)
UEFA 41% (2-5-2)
Oceania 33% (0-1-0)
Africa 28%( 1-2-3)
Concacaf 22% (0-2-1)

lol at UEFA having the same wins as Asia so far. ( holland vs denmark doesnt count)

What are the percentages based on? It's not % of possible points and it's not win (or not lose) % either, what am I missing here?

Yeah I concluded it wasn't possible points based on the 33% with 0-2-1, didn't look at all of them. But apparently its just a mistake.

Don't they re-align how many bids each group gets based on results?

I would fully expect after this WC that CONMEBOL moves from 4.5 to 5 and takes the half spot away from CONCACAF. CONMEBOL gonna advance every team, only USA gonna advance from CONCACAF.

It's not like T&T, Costa Rica, Honduras, or whoever else fills in that 1/2 spot has a chance of beating the 5th place CONMEBOL anyway.

IMO they need to scrap the half-spot to Oceania/AFC and move New Zealand in with the Asia region. Give that seed to South America.

New Zealand earned their ticket by beating New Caledonia, Fiji, and Vanuatu. And then beating the 5th place Asian team Bahrain, who probably would finish last in the MLS.

Oceania is down to 0.5 spots anyway, NZ had to win a playoff with an Asian team (Bahrain) to get in, seems about fair.

I'm fairly certain that some regions (like NA/CA, Asia, and Africa) are intentionally overrepresented because FIFA want to grow the game in those places. Yes there are better teams in Europe and SA that don't get it. The point is that this is the World Cup, not the "Best 32 Teams Cup".

new zealand played vs asian team (bahrain) to get here. Oceania gets 0,5 spots and asia get 4,5.

At least as the second games start and teams really need to go for points, we'll have some more open play. Seems like 80% of the first round teams were playing not to lose.

IIRC in the last WC you had good teams come out in the first match and look really good, Italy, Spain, Germany, Portugal, Argentina, off the top of my head.

Because without huge amounts of free tickets, the stadions would be even more empty?

How are these percentages calculated? Do they use these Confed rankings for anything?

if you guys want to see a crazy celebration, youtube some videos of the Celtic/ManU CL match from a few years back when Nakamura hits the ridiculous free kick to win the game. There's even an insane video from one guy recording from the crowd as the goal goes in. Possibly my favorite soccer moment (that doesn't include teams I support)

I think we're seeing the world shrink. Sure, one of the powers is going to win almost certainly. But the gap between the haves and have-nots is getting slowly smaller. Which makes sense since it's tough for the big powers to get more dominant, meaning that as the lesser soccer nations improve training, coaching, investment, the gap necessarily has to shrink. Diminishing returns and all. Couple that with how hard it is to score and the natural variance of the game, and I suspect we'll see a shocking WC champion in say the next 8-10 WC's, or at the very least, a non-UEFA powerhouse/Brazil/Argentina/ winner.
