Because it's a penalty kick and it's supposed to be an advantage, I just don't see why the attacker shouldn't be allowed to approach the kick in whatever way he chooses.

Paradoxically allowing the feint before the kick would actually make goalkeepers better since (one would assume) they would not dive as often knowing that the fbtk is an option, and studies/game theory show that goalkeepers dive way too often and would do well to just stand in the middle of the goal a whole lot more.

The point is that those who can feint a kick are virtually unexploitable. There's nothing to stop them leaning back a little - the referee won't catch the extra power they generate.

In effect, they get two shots at a penalty, which is not in the spirit of the game theory decisions we find compelling.

I don't see how changing the dynamic entirely before a major tournament can be a good thing.

ffs penalties

a striker shouldnt miss them anyway.

Saves are expected to be made sometimes.

I agree with the run up and blast it approach.

If you get them into the corner or above halfway in the goal, then it's some save for the keeper to make.

That's a cool statement, but in reality only 76% of penalties are converted

I belief in some kinda karma that gives edges to teams, its really hard to explain logically, the more rational explanation I can come up with is that I believe the spanish shirt has a negative placebo effect while the brazilian shirt has a positive placebo effect.

Actually fake stopping in the run up is still allowed. You aren't allowed to fake kick the ball now. Which almost no one did anyway. Apart from some Brazilian maniacs.

You're also spouting that South American defenders are the best in the world. I'm pretty sure this can be tested empirically or simply ignored due to common sense

Meh, I can sort of agree with what valenzuela is saying. I lived in Brazil for a while and there are definitely a whole lot of people who think there is some mystical voodoo **** about the Brazil team in WCs or whatever.

So if some poor kid from a favella really buys into the notion of the Brazil shirt being "magical" or whatever, who is to say that won't give him confidence and make him play better?

Self-fulfilling prophecies itt.

Edit: I'm not saying I believe it, or even that it's a significant factor, just that it COULD play a role.

Final Argentina squad: Players cut were

Lavezzi (Napoli)
Datolo (Olympiakos)
Sosa (Estudiantes)
Mercier (Argentinos)
Blanco (Lanus)
Insaurralde (Newell’s)
Coloccini (Newcastle)

One too many strikers stayed on imo (guess who). Super-glad Coloccini was cut and happy Pastore stayed in.

It's so funny that there are a 2nd league player and a 50 year old striker playing in Argentina on the squad while 2 who are in the first 11 of a Serie A + Coppa Italia winner + CL finalist can watch the World Cup at home.
