In that Arsenal v Sheffield United game, a replay was only held because Arsenal offered one. That has to be the case here as well. France can either choose to make an offer, which should be seen worldwide as an honourable act. Or they should stay quiet and keep their place, which will be seen worldwide as a dishonourable omission. There is no middle ground. I think if they make the offer and Ireland accept then FIFA should grant it.

Also, I think that if the circumstances were exactly the same but with England instead of France, we would offer a replay. There would be public outrage if we didn't.

It's impossible to prove, but I highly doubt that. I don't believe any country has EVER offered to a replay a match after they benefited from a referee's mistake.

EDIT: You mean like in 1966, after you "scored" a bull**** goal in the final against Germany that allowed you to win your only World Cup?

their was a replay in the 2006 WC qualifiers in the Asian or African section IIRC after a penalty was not awarded

LOL, pwned as OAFK would say. And worse, there are still apologists, Geoff Hurst chief among them, who claim to this day the goal was good.

GTFO, with this 'much bigger matches' BS. This was the biggest game for Ireland for 7 years, our best performance in my lifetime, to have it decided that way is ****ing heartbreaking, everybody here just dreams about making the WC, some of our players cried last night, it's their dream to play on the biggest stage with the world watching and a massive chance in their careers. Going out on penalties to Spain in 2002 hurt like 1,000 times less than this.

For players like Shay Given, Robbie Keane, Damien Duff and Richard Dunne it was probably their last chance to play in the World Cup and they've been robbed by that piece of cheating.

A replay is stupid, what's done is done, just going to have to get over it. Just have to wait another 4 and a half years for 2014.

That was a goal. But whatever the case, I think you probably lack the necessary wherewithal to determine whether the English FA would offer a replay in these circumstances. It isn't something an unenlightened country or its people would contemplate. I'm not saying we (or the French, who do seem to be contemplating it) would offer a replay in every circumstance where we've benefited from a combination of foul play and poor refereeing. Not even many of those circumstances. But this case is so blatantly cheating and unjust that I think it deserves special consideration. I actually think a match like this, where the winner gets to play in the World Cup, could be a more important game than something like a World Cup final. Plus it's a lot easier to replay this game than a World Cup match since there are still 7 months until the World Cup and plenty of time to right this wrong.

comeon england would not offer the replay if they played a game as close as that match.

Just pasting this from a post on an Irish football forum. They seem optimistic.

And they will have a lot of French support.

Francois Bayrou, a former candidate for the French presidency: "In an ideal world, the match should be played again. I saw the match and like a lot of people I wasn't very proud, and like everyone else I asked why don't we have a video match official. It works in rugby and it works very well."

Leading French politician, Philippe De Villiers: "Raymond Domenech should express his public regrets and show a gesture of dignity towards Ireland. The moral of this match is that you can cheat as long as you don't get caught. The France team is going to be labelled for years as a team of cheats."

It is dillusional to ask for a replay...
Still I would find it awesome if we were to offer a replay to Ireland, and would fully support it

lolFrenchsupport they're both bad politicians and the second one is a catholic/royalist integrist who shouldn't talk about teaching dignity nor morals.
