I have not had the opportunity to watch the game, so to those who did:

i) How much of an overreaction is it to say that this is not going to game 6? Were they actually that good or did they just make everything?

ii) Rhetorical question: why is Kevin Martin getting minutes over Simmons? What's the point?

i) imo not much of an overreaction, spurs looked straight up way better. they hit a lot of jumpers but many were totally open - there was some really bad d from okc. and okc were completely frustrated trying to score

gonna be a rough series for rwb - not enough seams for him to attack the rim if okc is going to play like this on d. just running it through lma and kawhi slows it down so much and neither of them turn it over much so it's really going to limit his opportunities imo

durant tried but he wasn't getting much either - i don't see him having a consistently good series against the combo of kawhi + backline size that the spurs have

They literally made everything, shot like 80+% in the 1st. OKC could make a basket, even lay ups. I think it's a slight over reaction but SA looked way better.

billy donovan looked like a deer caught in headlights. dont think okcs athleticism can overcome spurs. they are just too good this year. kawhi leonard on russ, green on KD worked. kd needs a good coach, he cant beat the spurs playing like they did last night. their paint defense is too good so they can play off russ safely with backup. think pop kind of solved them and dont see billy coming up with adjustments

spurs did play as well as they possibly can and okc played as bad as they can. feel like spurs field goal percentage in the first quarter couldve been a playoff record?

no, its not even their own record over the past two years. they shot 86% in the first quarter of game 3 in the '14 finals.

Did anyone anywhere even talk about Kawhi guarding Russ before yesterday? I think we all just assumed he'd be guarding Kawhi, but he covered Russ ~90% of the time and held him to 3-16 shooting.

was listening on the radio on the road during that quarter

the announcers were falling over themselves laughing once it got really going

Yeah pretty sure LeBron guarded Parker in Game 7 of the '13 finals, held him to like 3-12 shooting and Pop pulled him in crunch time.

I was pretty surprised honestly. Worked perfect though forcing him right into one of the two bigs, he had no chance.

In the post game, they asked Russ what Kawhi prevented him from doing and he's like "nothing really".

Lol at this series having a thread. Everything should be merged into the playoff game thread

This is prob that thing where everyone overreacts (thinking series is over) even though we should know better and objectively know the shooting is unsustainable etc.

right, I remember (it may have been '13 as well) where OKC and SA just alternated beatdowns game after game. No game was close.

Pop was not amused by a reporter noticing and asking a question about it is why I remember. Reply was like, "I don't know why" and then proceeding to mock the reporter when it was a good question.

Pop is really a dick in error at times. Plays up the tough guy with the media thing.

Yea he goes a little bit too far sometimes. The LMA answer yesterday was too much of just making the reporter feel dumb, not successfully tinged with humor.

I think most of Pop's antics stem from his refusal to talk actual basketball strategy, especially in the middle of a series and def not in the middle of a game.

I can't recall any time that he's actually revealed what they want to do strategically.

The Suns had Marion guard Parker some back in '07 I'm pretty sure. Put Nash on Bowen.

Guarded Duncan and Parker for significant chunks of time in the same series.

that's a good take

also operates as a diversion so the attention and tough questions isn't on his guys because he's so bland, I mean he could not answer the questions in a more dull way.

He might not answer but he makes for good copy, on TV at least.

ya I know there's multiple examples of that kind of thing so the tactic isn't surprising to me. Marion may be the root of where I was thinking about Parker being guarded by bigger guys, Bron I knew about but there was someone I was trying to pin down. So thanks.

Think Kobe guarded Rondo when he was raping them too.

Kobe "guarded" Rondo for almost the entire 2010 finals and a good deal of 2008 (but Eddie House played a lot of big 2nd half minutes for the Celts, most notably the 24 point comeback)

Kobe would just sag 7 feet off Rondo.

The question was "what about lamarcus performance with 38 points what is it youve seen from him and his success? What the hell is he supposed to say?

sure that was the narrative though, which only serves as a data point for Kawhi guarding RWB not being a shock or very unorthodox

it was prbly '08 when he was like "i'll take him" after a while

Say "he made a lot of shots, it's as simple as that" in a non-condescending manner?

Pretty much exactly what he did. It was a terrible question, if you could even call it a question. Hes been way worse with better questions.
