oh well, it's my trip and not everyone wants to scuba and surf and see animals and stargaze and sail around and lounge on the beach with sea lions, etc

I don't drink, club, or go to fancy restaurants; I don't care how hot the locals are since I'm married. So my choices will likely be very different from most here.
Hey nicholas, for the record, I thought you had the best (or 2nd or so) writeup of the draft. It was so good that in my mind you won - I will be going to the galopogos islands!

now the only question is when should I take this trip?

Heading into a meeting, will have a more detailed writeup later.

Let me know if this is too broad, if not, I'll narrow it down, but it lacks a major city...

Spoiler:
Round 2, Pick 47

The Italian Riviera

From Wikipedia

Quote:
The Riviera is centred by Genoa, which divides it into two main sections: the Riviera di Ponente, extending westwards from Genoa to the French border; and the Riviera di Levante between Genoa and Capo Corvo.

It is famous for its particularly mild climate which, together with the charm of its old fishing ports and the beauty of its landscape, has made it a popular destination for travellers and tourists since the time of Byron and Shelley.

Many villages and towns in the area are internationally known, such as Portofino, Bordighera, Lerici, and the Cinque Terre.

The part of the Riviera di Ponente centred on Savona, is called the "Riviera delle Palme" (the Riviera of palms); the part centered on Sanremo, is the "Riviera dei Fiori", after the long-established flower growing industry.

I think it's because the surrounding outdoorsy stuff you can do in VAN is better than what you can do in Ontario. City limits vs city limits Toronto is better.

I'm a little surprised that's the first Italian coastline taken...

Last edited by Mittens; 04-14-2011 at 03:43 PM. Reason: meh makes sense now that I see everything that includes, I'd have chosen the other famous one first though.

like Mittens said, Vancouver has much better variety of things to do, and is a more laid-back and probably fun city, and has better weather. Toronto is like a wannabe NYC or Chicago.

Was actually looking at Nice first, but the Riviera was definitely ahead of other Italian coastline for me.

Is the "entire italian riviera" an actual destination? if it just spans a bunch of sq miles, that isn't really fair, and needs to be narrowed down to 1 particular town or city along the coast.

I believe it is, it's about 100 miles long, but very narrow. I don't think people who visit the area stick to one town, much how people who visit cities venture out a short ways in different directions.

think its pretty fair. Even if you pick a single city, you pretty much get the rest of it anyways.

Writeup for 2nd pick:

Spoiler:

Greater Toronto Area (GTA)

Yes, I'm taking my home town...because I never get bored of it and just love it. Its known as the Greater Toronto Area or MEGA CITY, which is just a bunch of suburban cities surrounding the actual City of Toronto. The GTA has got a little bit of everything, plus a little more. People call it the New York of the North, and though I see what they're trying to say, I think it's safer to compare it to Chicago (but with more diversity, culture and overall, nicer people). LOL CANADA

It really does have a bit of everything you could think of. Though last call is 2am, it shouldn't be that big of a deal unless you're a college student or an alcoholic...or both, which I'm none of. Overall, nightlife here is awesome and has something for just about every demographic (personally, I'm out of the whole clubbing phase, but there are some nice lounges, bars and restaurants). Speaking of restaurants; fine dining restaurants are plentiful - but what separates Toronto from other big cities is the authentic cuisine from all over the globe...and I'm not talking about Alice Fazoolis or Mandarin. We got ChinaTown, Greek Town, Little Italy to name a few. I don't feel like wikiing it, but I'm pretty sure we have the most multicultural city in the world...I'm pretty sure of it.

Other fun things to do:
Paramount Canadas Wonderland (theme park)
Hockey Hall of Fame
Royal Ontario Museum
Science Center
Chitload of Micro Breweries
Chitload of Golf courses
CN Tower
Centre Island
Boating (Lake Ontario)
Camping/Cottages (Lake Simcoe)
Fishing (Lake Simcoe)
Teams in all major sports
-Leafs, Raps, Jays, TFC and soon to be Bills

Aside from mountains and great beaches, you name it we probably got it. Business sector, entertainment district, suburban residential area, posh areas, po areas and a lot of middle class.

Vacation Destinations:

Jan/Feb: Maui
Aug/Sep: Greater Toronto Area

Just did some reading on Salvador. Sounds like some sort of Rio lite where you get the same things, just less of them. Similar pros/cons. Only 2.6 million people as opposed to Rio's 6m+ so that might be a good or bad thing depending on what you want.

And as hot as Adriana Lima is she's the exception rather than the rule. 80%+ of the chicks are of afro descent so if you like black/native chicks this place is def for you.

Cool location iyam.

For vacationing purposes, its usually divided into Genoa and west of that and the Cinque Terre portion of the Ligurian Coast.

A reasonable radius around Genoa would include most of the Italian Riviera and not really exclude anything else that anyone might consider a "destination." The Italian Riviera seems pretty reasonable.

Edit: Well, unless it is logically divided into two regions. I'm not really familiar with the area.

LOL TORONTO

WORST CITY EVER

AHAHAHHAHAH nothing against you WW but it is my duty to chirp Toronto as the crapopolis it deserves.

People come here from Europe and actually think the public transport is some form of joke, so gg for a vacation here. Not that if you rented a car it would matter, since Toronto is commonly listed among Brazilian and Chinese cities of 20M for the worst traffic in the world. Torontonians are elitist when there's nothing to be elitist about. But at least we have hockey right? Nope, not a single arena has been built in the city of Toronto proper since the 1970s. Blah blah blah etc terrible city.

edit - wow, you're from TO too. To each his own I suppose.

Its logically divided into two areas in the sense that you will choose to either go to one or the other. For the purposes of this draft, I suppose you would select Genoa and get the whole thing. Of course, you could choose "undrafted" and get a good portion of the Italian Riviera and all sorts of other non-beach things.

I'm actually surprised it wasn't done that way because it would have been a first round choice (or at least value) for sure.

one of my life-long dreams has been to travel the world for 2-3 years staying 3 months in each place, so i'm gonna be looking for how i would do that if i had one year with 2 months each per this draft (perhaps when my kids go to college that's what we'll do)

Of course the Amazon doesn't work in this format, but I would absolutely love to go there. As for the Galapagos, it's a facemelter that wasn't on my list, but that I'm now convinced is a top-5 destination in the world (and is now the only tropical-island type of location in my personal top 50). One question, since you've been there, is how is the food? Anything noteworthy?

My reasons for traveling to various places are pretty different from most ITT, something like:

#1: Food
#2: Wildlife
#3: Geographic beauty
...
#8534: Clubs that I'll never ever go to

Generally tropical islands don't appeal to me, since I hate warm temperatures (anything over about 70 is getting uncomfortable to me), I can't swim, and I don't like sand. However the wildlife + stargazing combo sounds amazing, and I could totally put up with being on a tropical island in order to have access to those elements. Especially if there is good food. Unlike me, my girlfriend *does* see the appeal of tropical islands and has hinted that she'd love to travel to some, eventually. I think you've given me the perfect compromise option!
