I see the draw is on Friday at 11am Central on ESPN2. Can someone explain why this thing takes 3 hours?

"A series of speeches, traditional dances, and music" IIRC. Plus they'll drag out the draw process as long as they possibly can I would imagine. Any guesses on when Charlize Theron actually starts pulling balls ?

2 hours of fluff and 1 hour of drawing.

lame.

Great draw for the two CONCACAF teams. Mexico drew South Africa but actually have a tougher group and a lower chance of getting out.

Indeed, very good draw from the US. England/US will be very fun and help get people excited. The downside is that Algeria and Slovenia are better teams than Joe Fan will think they are, I expect the US to be a decent dog to get more than one point in each of those matches while the public will think of them as creampuffs or whatever. Obviously, still much better than drawing France and Ivory Coast.

somewhere, a soccer god is smiling upon us. algeria and slovenia? that's hotter than moneymaker ran at wsop2005.

if you could have hand picked teams from those pots for the US to face, you might have chosen algeria and slovenia.

Bink! Is it a flip now? Still tough when we're basically fighting for one spot between Algeria and Sovenia, but a lot better than it could be.

Sick draw for USA...But somehow i wish that we got a tougher group becuase USA is known for slacking against bad teams and playing really well against better teams..but we should still advance....

huh, decent dog to get more than a point from those games? No way man, we are probably close to even to get a win in either of those games. They way that group looks to me, dog to get a point against England, but I'd be amazed if we lost both games to Slovenia and Algeria, marginally happy with a draw and win out of those two games. I can see us getting at least 3 points from this group, with England getting at least 7.

You got the year wrong. Moneymaker won in 2003.

The failure runs deeper than that.

sorry I knew that was badly phrased, I meant for each individual match p(lose or tie) > p(win). I think getting 4 points from those two matches is slightly above expectation.

Well I see England getting at least 7 points in that group, 5 being worst case. US can get 4 points, I think. Algeria, clearly the worst African team, I'll be surprised if they have more than 2 points. Slovenia is the tough opponent imo, but I like our chances. I think anything less than a point against them will be a dissapointed though.

Basically this is a great draw for the US. No excuses for not making it out of this.

Interviewer: What is the key to attacking England?
Bob Bradley: I need a little time to figure that out.
12-04-2009 , 03:02 PM
i think we get 4 points fwiw and i think that's enough so long as our neighbors across the sea take care of business.
12-04-2009 , 03:05 PM
I don't think Algeria is that bad, they have good players playing in good leagues. And they'll have some degree of HFA. They're the worst African side and probably the best for us from Pot 3 but I don't think it's that big of a difference in expectation than playing one of the lower south american/europe sides.

5 is good goal I think, a win over Algeria and a draw against the UEFA teams almost guaranteeing advancing.

Something that is bad is that England play Slovenia last. If England beat the US and Algeria and the US and Slovenia draw then England will have top wrapped up which would be huge as it could come down to goal differential or not even that since Slovenia would likely get a result if England are playing their subs.
