Both his father and mother (I believe) played in college, and his father I'm pretty sure also played semi-pro as an adult for an indoor soccer league (from what I remember in an interview). And he grew up in the US (minus the small amount of time abroad). If you want to give his parents more credit than the youth development in this country, that's fine. But let's not pretend (as an example) that this is some dual citizen who grew up his entire life in Germany, and when he couldn't qualify for the German national team, he decided to play for the US. The guy grew up here and his parents nurtured his talents throughout his youth, until he was good enough to get signed by Dortmund.
All I'm saying is, it IS possible to have someone of his caliber come from the States.
