That's the idea when you are placed in a pot with most of the weakest teams of the tourney.

If the USA could have hand-picked its group for 2010 would it have basically been the exact group they were drawn into?

Never underestimate USA's WIM. WE're going to be in the knockout stages.

Oddly the same teams you played to get into the tourney.

A page or so ago I said I'd rather have a tougher qualification process then be in such a tough position in the draw.

There really aren't that many Asian teams in CONCACAF, BTW.

wow great post

i obviously can't be mad that we are in the weakest pot. we don't deserve to be playing next summer and if we get group of deathed, i wouldn't even mind it. of course i'd love to get an easy draw, but being put in a sick tough group would be a nice punishment for us for getting to the world cup in the way that we made it.

and before anyone asks, we= MEXICO.

Mexico can't be in the group of death by definition

haha. If the best teams from pot 1, 2 & 4 were drawn w/ Mexico that would still be the group of death since it would be 3 really good teams fighting for 2 spots.

I just want to avoide any CONMEBOL teams. If we do that, I think we've got a very very good shot to advance. Gets tougher if we have a CONMEBOL team, especially one from Pot 2.

Regardless of the draw, advancing is the benchmark for success.

This can't be the consensus, right?

I would think it is much better to basically be guaranteed a World Cup entry and have less equity advancing to the knockout stage than to have a 50% chance of making the World Cup and a bit more knockout stage equity.

I agree. I am super happy with auto-qualification. Take our chances from there. If we are good enough, then great. If not, that's sports.

playing in the WC every time has other benefits such as continuing to increase the profile of the sport, which certainly can't hurt from a player development standpoint.
