Insecurity. Sense of entitlement complex.
They're supposed to be the top dogs in Spain, but have only won the league once in the last 8 years. It hurts.
That's also where Ronaldo's antics stem from, I reckon.
There's absolutely no doubt that he's done every single thing he possibly can to become the best ever, but still falling short thanks to Messi must hurt.
RM fans also seem to draw more enjoyment from failure of others than from success of their own. It's weird.
Bad winners, bad losers. Probably bad drawers, too.

While I sort of agree with the sentiment in your post, statistically speaking Messi is actually better than Ronaldo in both of those categories; Messi's goals expected per shots taken is quite a bit higher than that of Ronaldo's.
Ronaldo having a field-day here and there doesn't change the fact that he just doesn't have the consistency comparable to that of the little magician.
But then again, who does? No one.
Most likely no one will either. In our lifetime, anyway.
Messi is way way more likely to dribble past someone, more likely to make a key pass, create a chance, score a goal, make an assist, win a duel.
You name it.
And obviously Messi's also much more important contributor in the build-up play and less dependent on the service of others in general.
Ronaldo's pretty deadly in the box, though. Especially in the air.
Say what you will about Zinédine "re-inventing the cross" Zidane, but he's squeezing the most out of Ronaldo's current abilities.
Anyway, I'm quite hard-pressed to find a single meaningful statistic where Ronaldo is ahead long-term. In fact, winning aerial duels might be the only one.
And that's not a good look for a player, who's self-proclaimed 'best ever', when even amongst the current crop of players there's one who's better in every aspect of the game.
I quite like Ronaldo, and he might go down in history as the 2nd greatest of all times, but comparing him to Messi and somehow coming to a conclusion Ronaldo's the better footballplayer is a surefire sign of the evaluator simply lacking objectivity.
