Pudge,

Much better put than me but this is essentially what I was going for and why I didn't take another show.

Also, edit out the undrafteds guys.

i think the sopranos is a top 10 pick easy. There are so many different ways to go in this draft its hard to really think its too high at all

With the third pick in the TV draft, the Zoidsilvre Network selects...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YkCM9yawOnc

Spoiler:

I doubt that any show that will be drafted will be one which sat on the back-burner for as long as this one did. Originally conceived as a feature movie all the way back in 1974 (by Michael Crichton, of all people), it debuted in September 1994 on NBC and immediately hit the ground running, finishing #2 in the ratings in its first season. It would finish in the top ten ten seasons in a row, and was the #1 show in the US three times. All with a constantly rotating cast and a 10pm time-slot that doesn't produce a lot of #1 shows (even on Thursday night).

More importantly, ER was the ne plus ultra of hospital dramas, nominated for 124 Emmys, winning 22 of them, and held down a Thursday night which left NBC head and shoulders above all other networks in the late 1990s. Nowadays any regularly scheduled show which draws 10 million viewers is a big success (shows like Bones and Grey's Anatomy get around that). Anything with 15 million would be a juggernaut (like CSI or Criminal Minds). Anything with 25 million would stomp all competition (like American Idol). However, ER drew up to 40 million viewers -- on episodes that weren't season finales! Season 6, episode 14
Spoiler:
aka Lucy getting stabbed to death
got 39 million viewers in what may be the last time a non-finale, non-landmark, non-reality show episode legitimately gets everyone (really, everyone) talking. Idol may be the Death Star of contemporary US television, but it's never drawn 39 million. Nowadays only the Super Bowl and the AFC/NFC conference championships draw that consistently, and that's only three "episodes" a year.

Obviously that didn't last forever, and the aired its final episode last April. Nonetheless, between its length of run, its quality, and its ability to draw viewers, I don't think ZSN could do any better with its opening pick.

I don't think we need an all encompassing undrafted rule. I mean I am pretty sure everyone knows about The Wire and I think speculation is fun in this draft. If people want to hold some picks tight to the vest, that's fine as well. If others disagree i'll change my ruling, but I don't really think it matters that much at this point.

Edit: ER isn't the sexiest pick, but it is a very solid pick. The number one network drama imo.

my #1 is still on the board.

both picks so far are easy top 5, and actually 2 of the first 3 i thought of.

ER is a good pick. Solid (although not great) show with amazing mass appeal. In that mold of show there is one show I would have picked above it but ER is not bad.

ER is surprising to me, but still a very good pick, I am just realizing how deep even the top picks are in this

i agree to a degree. like, the idea that a bunch of Wire fanboys are not going to be thinking about The Wire is pretty silly, but the deeper this gets the more i'm going to not want to reveal what i'm thinking about taking or comparing undrafteds to recent picks.

Saw Simpsons going in the 1-3 range, thought the Sopranos would drop unless you put them in your 10:00 spot, completely forgot about ER, good pick.

ER is interesting, I really hadn't thought much about it tbh, but it crushed for so so so long

I think we should have rules on undrafteds, this seems pretty much the same as every draft in that the top 10 should be pretty obvious to everyone but as soon as we're out of that things are up for debate and people could easily miss shows that aren't in recent memory for example.

+1

I didn't think mentioning The Wire of American Idol in Round 1 would startle anyone diehard enough to do a TV Draft

Spoiler:

with the #4 selection sixfour and I snap pick

Since its creation American Idol has become a smash hit. This show is still popular 8 years later, and we see no reason why it wouldnt become as popular now as it was then.

American Idol is a good pick. Honestly, Simon is one of the better "characters" currently on TV

I suppose you can't argue with the mass appeal, even though I hate everything about the show. The only positive it has provided me with is proving a lot of people I know to be ******ed to the point I can completely ignore them.

Standard imo

I have never gotten into AI, but it obviously it has a huge/loyal fanbase, so that is a legit pick.

its not my favorite show either, but we couldnt look passed how insanely popular it has been

yeah, we basically thought that the entire "noughties", at least where I'm at, has been dominated by reality programming, and it seemed to be a pick that couldn't possibly go wrong and can basically run perennially.
