If he wins this one, he'd be the second oldest person to ever win one and the oldest since 1972 and he'd do it in an age where the competition is way stronger than in the past.

Even this weird Rafa-lite version of Nadal we're seeing at the moment still matches up uber well against Fed so we may need Dimitrov to pull something out of the bag tomorrow.

35-year-old comes back from a six-month injury lay-off playing better than he has since 2012 and beats two top five players in five sets, if I wasn't so cynical I'd call it a fairy tale.

Remember when the best womens players were all in their late teens/early 20s and even most of the best male players weren't much older than mid to late 20s at the most? Times have changed clearly.

Basically there's a 10 year chasm where like 6 future Hall of fame tennis players were supposed to filter in to the game but haven't on both sides of the tour.

Indeed. That is also the period whereby the true 'Millennial' generation started to filter in (obviously Nadal, Djoko, Murray, Maria are older millennials, but you know, they didn't have internet when they were 5).

Although for balance, the last ten years has also seen advancements in sports science and recovery techniques that have helped the older players too.

This whole "This is Federer's last chance to...." stuff has been going on for 8 god damn years. It's so annoying.

He is playing very well right now. He may play very well for 2 more years or he may completely fall apart tomorrow. Can we ever all just accept we aren't suthsayers and will not know when his "last chance" was until some point in the future?

There is no logical reason he can't lose the AUS open but then perhaps win Wimbledon, I just don't get this line of thinking.

well i guess his last chance should have been a long time ago, but all the 30+ players amazingly seem to have found the magical fountain of youth somehow

good thing they made an example of Sharapova

lol, ok will this is a different discussion all together. Any theories/hypothesis on why we catch so many cyclists but no tennis players? I've heard a lot of chatter match dumping for gambling is a problem as well.

motivation i would guess

i don't know much about cycling, but in the stories about busting these guys you often hear crazy details about breaking into hotel rooms, car chases down the highway, etc which suggests that the motivation to catch ppl is there

NFL players test positive all the time
MLB players sometimes
NBA & NHL about never, but it's definitely not for a lack of use
soccer players not very often either, which is lol considering their workload

i would assume that tennis is in a similar situation of looking the other way, rather forcing their stars to the sidelines

the Sharapova situation was fairly bizarre, not quite sure why that played out that way, but lololol @ her being the only top player using PEDs
